I was in the telecom store a while ago and saw they had the same terminal as countdown. Wonder if they all have the same terminals that only allow credit cards?

I went in to one of those quick fix 24/7 shops on queen street (forte street actually) which had a paywave terminal. That worked brilliantly.

Merchants have no reason to accept debit cards over the visa network, as in NZ, unlike the USA and some other places they are charged the same merchant fee for both types of cards, with the user getting no benifit at all from it going thru the visa network like up to 55 days interest free.

If you want to use paywave, get a proper credit card. If you dont want one of those then stick with chip and pin, or you may as well just use swipe based eftpos since its faster.

The only benefit to the end user would be time and ease of use. The time it takes to dip your card, wait for it to load, choose your account, wait for it to load again, fondle with your pin on the keypad, wait a bit more for it to process compared to just tapping your card.

We've all seen people at checkouts who get confused which way to swipe their cards, dipping their cards the wrong way etc. It would be a benefit to the merchant also with time saved, although only seconds it would all add up.

If a merchant displays "payWave" then they should accept ALL payWave cards IMO, whether VISA or VISA Debit. If it's an issue, then they should work on the ability for it to pick direct from the debit account.

My ASB Visa Debit card has never worked at BP

Works at Shell though

It's not the account it's using - it's the network or routing of the transaction.

Straight eftpos or debit goes via the proprietary debit network through the banks.
Contactless scheme debit goes via the two card sschemes (MC & V) and has charges attached.

Visa know about the choice by some large retailers to not accept contactless debit and rolled over.

I thought visa would be against merchants doing this as it gives customers the impression paywave is a gimmick and doesn't work while visa is trying so hard to promote with ads on tv etc.

Are you sure you don't have a credit card with cheque/savings on the same card? From what we know merchants such as countdown will only accept credit cards when using paywave.

I just have Cheque programmed, but noticed I can actually press credit, then enter, and actually sign for things too. I do not have an ASB credit card at all. Paywave has always worked with me with is strange considering what I am reading here.

...or maybe it's just my new card
