Hi There!

I was just wondering why the new chip cards that everyone is moving to, process more slowly than the dumb cards, and why it's a requirement for the card to stay in the machine during the processing?

Not the chip problem, more likely so the EFTPOS terminal may not be fast enough.

I also thought that it was the card that's the problem when it's actually just that 90% of terminals seem to be slow. Best performance that I've seen is at the post office.

On the other hand, I do find it more convenient to be able to put the card away while it's processing and some terminals (such as the ones at New World) will allow you to remove the card and do this.

Yes the putting cards away thing is the thing that annoys me the most.

I saw a fancy new EFTpos unit the thing had a colour touch screen, that didn't see too slow.

The new BP EFTPOS terminals are so fast to accept the first time I saw it I thought it was an error

+1 .... the terminal itself, its connection speed to the provder (dialup vs adsl) and also the software between the terminal and the POS has a lot to do with the speed. Maccas has the fastest eftpos for debit cards and not too shabby when using credit cards. BP is up there with speed but not so much can be said for Z Energy.

More data is transmitted back and forth with a Chip and Pin card than a swipe card, and the retailer will be using a dial-up connection.

If a retailer is still on dialup the transaction times will be slower regardless, but as some aspects of the transaction with a chip card can't occur until the dialup connection is established dialup isn't ideal for chip cards.

Speeds also vary on the terminal type, with some such as the old Provenco terminals really struggling due to the processing requirements. These also run the cards at a higher speed so they're very warm when removed.

The warehouse Sylvia Park when opened had 40 machines on 1 eftpos modem (56k)
it was fast as untill the chips came in, not sure if it is ip or not now.

You'd be surpriced at the number of larg(er) retailers who use antequated systems. There are even adapters to convert existing dialup terminals to IP which are also very slow. These were quite common for a while.

Every non NFC terminal used for credit cards has to be replaced by mid 2014 anyway, so there will be a lot of upgrades occuring for retailers who didn't upgrade to NFC terminals last year when terminals under EMV 4.2 were culled.

I think I need to get into the EftPOS business :) This is like the 3rd mandatory upgrade in 5 years :)
