I have my credit card limit to $9000, and then I decide to adjust to $3000 via Fastnet. ASB charged me “Over Limit Fee”.

I rang ASB call centre staff, she told me that at the time I adjusted my limit to $3000, my balance was over $6000. I asked her why it didn’t warn me, if my balance is over $6000 then it should not let me adjusted lower than my balance and then charged me “Over Limit Fee”,  she told me “You should read the term and condition” blah blah blah. I told her that the Term and Condition only mention about charge for over 10% but not anything about the allowing you to adjust limit lower than your balance and charge you for "Over Limit Fee". Although she reversed the fee for me but I hope she can learn the system well before arguing with her customer. She is very unprofessional.

I spoke to another banker in ASB, I was advised that usually I can’t adjust the limit any lower than my balance. This makes sense.

I paid $7000 into my credit card before I adjust the balance, so my balance should be less than $3000 by the time I adjusted the limit.

before paying over $7,000 and adjusting the credit limit a check of the balance before and after the $7,000 payment would have been prudent before making any changes

I agree with KiwiNZ, but I also don't think it is unreasonable to expect the bank to suggest the limit should not be put down until after the current balance goes below that new limit.

I have never had this problem, when I was using my credit card as a personal load (cheaper interest etc) I was adjusting it every month and was never able to make it go below the owing balance.

You may have glitched the system, maybe go in to the bank and explain the situation to them and I guess next time be more careful that you aren't dropping your credit card limit lower than the owing balance.

I used to have a contact at ASB that I would e-mail/Call if things like this happened and they do have the discression to change these charges easily, you just need to go in and calmly and accurately describe what has happened.

Maybe "I made a payment to my credit card xxxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxx, shortly after this payment I lowered my credit limit on this card, unfortunately there seems to have been an issue where the payment I have made did not show in that short period of time, this caused the online system to think I had lowered my limit below my owing balance, Can you please look at reversing the fee for this as I feel that I was never over my credit limit"

If this was me, I would have tried this  before signing up to Geekzone to post this... Just saying.

The balance was updated, this explains how I could adjust to lower limit, I am guessing the fee system hasn’t been updated with the latest balance. Some of the bank systems run their update over night, to be safe don't adjust the limit on the same date as you pay for your credit card.

I did try to explain the situation to the her but she didn’t seem to listen and did not try to understand the situation. I also suggested her to get people to look into the system, there may be something wrong with it. I spoke to another ASB staff, she was really helpful and she told me that she will get someone technical to look into it.

Now i see what your saying, yes that does seem wrong, it should warn you or automatically not charge you based on the time the actions took place

Time to take them to https://www.fairplayonfees.co.nz/

I realised how much over limit fees and unarranged overdraft fees I have paid to ASB in the past. They are no longer by main bank and I have never looked back since.

These days I avoid them by having at least 13k limit on my cards

Depends - put over 50k on one ASB card annually and when I called to cancel they wanted nothing to do with me

I can say that ASB front line support ignore bug reports in internet banking.

My first thought was user error, but if it shows a balance below the limit you're changing to then charges you fees then it's clearly their fault and they should be reversed - as they were. Agree that customer service should be friendly and didn't do that well this time, but joining a forum to complain may be overkill.
