Did you pay tax in the purchase?

Or are you asking them to increase the price 15%

I probably paid (minimal) tax in Ireland (for use of a service over here).

And yes, GST @15% based on purchases from this country is fair, but I have since recalled that this is coming in soon.

I just hope that, in time, the Govt will reign in these multi-national companies that avoid paying tax in their countries of operation. Don't you?

Until the government changes the law to plug this loophole, companies like Google and Apple will happily exploit it.

Google, Apple, Microsoft, Adobe and others probably pay less tax in New Zealand than a lot of us around here.

Unless of course you're wealthy enough to be able to exploit your own loopholes.

Not really. I'm more concerned with my own tax than that of others and mostly slightly jealous they can afford better accountants than I can.

You do not have to be that wealthy to use the tax laws to your advantage. Just entrepreneurial enough to work for yourself, mainly.

But they are still not paying tax in NZ on a lot of the profit they make in NZ.

My Office365 sub is billed out of Singapore with no GST. There is a Singaporean GST number on the invoice, but like NZ , GST is zero rated on international services, and the company tax rate is about half that of NZ.

I for one don't see why they should pay tax here, they are not a New Zealand company, they pay tax in their own countries, We just choose to buy from them

We need to be careful what we wish for here. If international taxation laws relating to the delivery of products & services between countries is changed across most jurisdictions, NZ businesses will be adversely effected due to our bias towards exporting. The negative effect of this might offset the additional taxes collected from major corporates.

This whole issue is not quite as simple as it looks.

They often are an NZ registered company though, and are participating in our economy. What they are doing isn't moral IMO. It may however be legal, using loopholes in tax laws. But that doesn't mean it is right. Legal doesn't always mean moral.

I don't think so becuase we have tax agreements with other countries that prevent double taxation. It is all about companies using low tax countries to funnel their profits through, rather than what most NZ companies do. Eg using Irelands tax rate, when the company is based in the US, and the transaction occurs in NZ.
