Originally the Chorus 2nd generation Hyperfibre ONT was scheduled to start rolling out April 2023, however this has been pushed back to September 2023 - so definitely not in time for your install sorry!

As you've said, this newer ONT version does support being wall-mounted (and is much smaller than the current beast).

Hey @CYaBro,

Originally the Chorus 2nd generation Hyperfibre ONT was scheduled to start rolling out April 2023, however this has been pushed back to September 2023 - so definitely not in time for your install sorry!

As you've said, this newer ONT version does support being wall-mounted (and is much smaller than the current beast).

Our current ONT is wall mounted inside my small wall hung cabinet.
Probably no room for that hyperfibre ONT!

Well I'm pretty impressed....got some friends who have been on fixed wireless for a few years, only light users & cost is a primary motive for them...recently the performance on fixed wireless has got worse & worse to the point it's not even usable, barely see 2Mbps on a speedtest. I think there is something up with the cell tower in their area, but that's another thing.

I've recommended a few times they move to Fibre, but they've not been keen due to the price increase from their fixed wireless plan.

I popped round today to see if there was anything simple that could be done about improving their connection (there didn't seem to be). I'd just about convinced them to move to Fibre, and started explaining what would be required, and that they still wouldn't have a working connection for possibly up to a few weeks. When I started talking about the ONT, I got the old "what, you mean this white thing behind the TV?" Facepalm. Turns out Chorus had already installed an ONT a few years back, but it had never been used.

I remembered seeing here the other day that @quic had dropped the price on their 50/10 plan, and having read here all the glowing reports & quick setup times decided to recommend them - we signed them up about 3pm today (Saturday), I wasn't expecting anything until Monday at the soonest - 20 mins later, an email comes through saying connection will be live at 5pm. On a Saturday. Wow.

I couldn't pop back out until about 7, but took a router out, set that up & all go, piece of cake. Couldn't possibly have been simpler. The only thing I should have done is get a referral code from @ssamjh but was in bit of a hurry by the time we signed up. Really impressed. The ONT stats etc are very cool too. Definitely recommended.

Hey @aj6828,

I'll be completely honest here and say that while the capacity on our network is there, you'll need a beefy router. Because we (currently) use PPPoE, encapsulating this amount of data so quickly is intensive on a router and does get the CPU in the router working hard.

We do have work in the background to support IPoE & DHCP authentication which will definitely help this, but until then we're strictly PPPoE. The most common identifier of a router needing more "grunt" with PPPoE and Hyperfibre will be the upload speed. Generally download is fine, as our infrastructure is the equipment doing the encapsulation for the download traffic - hope this all makes sense.

Case in point, my home is on our Rocket 2G (Hyperfibre) plan, and my speedtest is below. Prime example where my router probably needs something beefier to encapsulate all that data its pushing/uploading, but I'm personally not too bothered as it's plenty enough for me!

If the 2G upload is *critically* important for you, I'd suggest getting a super beefy router, or keeping an eye on our news page for when IPoE/DHCP is available. 😊

hey thanks for the prompt reply .. Currently, i have a Xiaomi Router AX6000 due to it having a 2.5g port and wifi 6e it seems to have a Qualcomm IPQ5018 i wonder how it will be also doing your network need vlan tag enabled? ..

i understand the nokia hyper fiber ont can be configured in two methods as a Residential Gateway Mode or a router ...

currently, the ont works as a router with dhcp and the router is plugged in as an access point ..

can the nokia 110 ont be configured to connect as a router with PPPoE so the encapsulation happens there ?

failing that 2nd option is I haveNanoPi R6S a with it has a rk3588s cpu and i can get friendly wrt installed on it use that with residental gateway ..

You're correct in that the Hyperfibre/Chorus model 110 ONT can be either in "Standard" (like a normal ONT) or "RGW" (Residential gateway, acting as a router) mode. As our main target audience is tech-savvy individuals, the RGW mode does have some limitations with its configuration, and with most of our customers already having a router they wish to use, we don't currently support RGW mode - you must have your own router to complete the connection through to us.

I can't comment specifically on individual routers and what would be the best, especially in a Hyperfibre case, however one thing I did forget to mention in my last reply is being able to stand up your PPPoE at 1500 MTU, to decrease packet fragmentation definitely does help, so I'd be leaning more to your second option with your chosen WRT flavour installed.

As with anything, trial and error and everyone is different with their abilities and preferences. 👍

all the best mate last year when they were due to install it the first day they didn't show up and the 2nd time they said they dont have the ont with them the 3rd time they came and installed it and the connection wasn't activating the guy who installed it uploaded the settings in the wrong format or something 4th time they installed a new one and it was all good...

Can you drop any hints on the DHCP/IPoE timeline? I signed up today (live within an hour of signup, that's amazing), but my speeds have dropped from 900/500 to 400/300 I think entirely due to my FortiGate 60E being particularly bad at PPPoE (one core is maxed out during a full speed download).

Is it worth waiting, or should I go and buy a Draytek or something to handle PPPoE for me?
