We switched over from Voyager last Friday. Changeover was seamless, 2 min to update the router settings and off we went.

So far the only noticeable difference has been with latency. Loading content takes a second longer, which is a tad annoying (first world problems) but not the end of the world. I do hourly speed tests and you can see the before and after below. Speed is pretty good (though does have a lot more variability) but the ping has become noticeably higher on average and inconsistent.

The speed test is pinned to 1 server to provide more consistent results so I expected there to be some slight differences depending on routing to that provider (NOW) but, given both Quic and NOW peer at AKL-IX, I'm surprised there this much difference. You can see the drop to 0 on the 17th where we changed over.

This is indeed interesting. Are you able to find the FQDN or IP address of the server you're testing to? If so, can you please fire me a DM here with it? I'd like to get a bit of digging done on our side and the IP setup in some internal monitoring to dive a bit deeper.

@hucknz This is by-far not the best way to track latency. You're better to use Smokeping here. @ssamjh's graphs tell another story: https://home.sjh.at/smokeping/

I'm currently in the process of switching the connection at my friends place to Quic from Voyager. This is also on the end of a VPN for me where I have a NAS that has some files in sync with my home server so would be awesome to get WLG-IX peering eventually! Currently my traffic from 2degrees to his connection, despite being Wellington based is going up to Auckland and back down again.

Also a word of warning - Voyager have a strict 30 day notice period. If you don't warn them they'll tack 30 days onto your bill at the end. I found that out the hard way when my parents switched from Voyager to another ISP.

Thanks @michaelmurfy. I know it's not the most reliable source for latency, however it is most illustrative of what we've experienced since we changed over. The difference in latency has been noticeable. Where there was a short pause while Netflix loaded it's now a longer pause, a lot of content takes just a bit longer to load when we access it, etc.

I had looked at @ssamjh's before we made the decision to switch as I didn't want to move to something worse than what we had so, as I mentioned earlier, I was surprised there was this much of a difference.

Appreciate the advice on Voyager too. I had planned this well in advance so the order was lodged with Quic and Voyager given adequate notice when everything was confirmed on Quic's end.

I'm currently with 2degrees but as a 'power user' with homelabs and email servers for local use quic sounds mighty nice. I currently have a 'cheap' Static IPv4 and /56 IPv6 for the low value of $5 per month but couldn't find mention of the cost of a static IP with Quic, anyone know?

If you go through their signup process it gives you the price. We paid a $49 one-off charge, I believe there's also a monthly option for $6.

Cool thanks, I hadn't got that far.

In terms of hostnames again 2degrees have configured a hostname for my IPv4 connection to allow the mail server to work better, does Quic allow this setup for each static IP?

Also the Static IP is 100% automatic so you can actually add this at any time from your control panel and it'll apply straight away.

Just one currently, however there is a business case building in the background to implement some additional options to get a /30 or /29 of space. Watch this space! :-)

If you have an external DNS provider for your domain names, they should allow you to just create any AAAA records you want, usually via a web page to edit the DNS. Personally, I run my own internal and external DNS servers at home (with Metaname as my registrar and also providing backup external DNS servers). For forward DNS, you just create any DNS records you want. It is the reverse DNS (PTR records) where there are problems, as that needs to be delegated to you by the owner of the IP addresses, or they need to provide the service.
