Hello,

I am looking at moving from Spark to Quic, but am unsure whether it is suitable for someone like myself who has a general knowledge of Router setups but is certainly not proficient with them. I am on Spark fibre at present using my Asus RT-AX5400 router. Any help before I make a decision would be grateful.

Regards,

David

It's entirely up to you. If you can manage through the router setup, you'll be fine. But as you already know, there's limited support if you break something.

Overall though, I love the product, so it gets a recommend from me.

If you request a tagged connection with Quic, and remaining on the same ONT port, then you shouldn't need to touch anything from your end. Things should just keep working.

Alternatively, should be fairly easy to reconfigure your router for an untagged connection as well.

If you're reasonably comfortable accessing router setting then I think you'll be fine. You can always ask here if there's something you don't understand. The primary contrast to other providers is Quic won't help you set up your router (other than the settings they have listed on their site), whereas a fuller service ISP will provide you with a router already configured.

Quic has an awesome discord community which you can join after you sign up. Lots of geeks in there that you can throw questions at if you get stuck :)

Yes, I think it’s a great way to learn as a beginner. If you’re happy to try diagnose issues yourself and ask for help on the discord if things go wrong you’ll do great!

If you just want the internet to work and call support if it doesn’t, then probably not for you.

If it doesn’t work out you can easily switch back.

Thank you all for the help, I will do some more thinking on this, but would really like to make the change.

I was thinking of moving to Skinny Broadband, but a lot of reviews are not good for them. I do have a mobile account with them for about a year now and have had no problems. I did try phoning them to discuss there Broadband but could never get through.

thanks again,
David

Skinny don't really offer any more support for 3rd party routers than Quic (all good if you use one provided bby Skinny). Additionally, their support seems to be the next one going rapidly downhill, with the primary means of contact being Facebook.

Just looking at the Quic signup page and it gives the option to use Vlan 10 or Untagged with untagged being the default. Should I select this?

As above, if you select tagged, then your existing Spark settings in your router will just work - you shouldn't need to change anything.

However, untagged is generally easier to set up if you are reconfiguring or changing your router.

So for ease of changeover from your old ISP, select tagged. If you don't mind a small reconfigure at changeover time then go for untagged as it is a little more flexible in the future.

It won't be that hard to change your router to untagged if you want to do that.

Yep you can change to untagged. Also recommend just setting tagged.

And I recommend Quic too ๐Ÿ˜Š

I would like to provide an alternative viewpoint.  This is the short version of my experience.

I was briefly with Quic but had to move because I could not work out why my router would not connect.  Back to hot spotting with my phone in the interim.

I moved to Voyager.  It took a day to get their router couriered to me, when it arrived the port from Quic to Voyager had already been done.  Plugged it in and full service provided.  Some months later, having had problem-free service from Voyager, I tested the TP-LINK router and got it working with Voyager's assistance.  So the rental router went back to Voyager.

I have only ever had to talk to Voyager 2 or 3 times.  The person on the other end clearly has technical knowledge.  They are never reading from a script and if they ever suggest a router reboot it is only after router config changes have been made.  Coming from Sky broadband the person answering the phone at Voyager is the equivalent of tier 2 or 3 support from Sky (2D).

OldGeek: [snip] I was briefly with Quic but had to move because I could not work out why my router would not connect.

There's a whole thread on this over here but to summarise, this was a case of the user activating a router setting that slowed the connection down. The only time you are going to get support from any ISP on this sort of issue is where they have supplied the router, and in all likelihood the support will likely be reset the router to factory defaults.

@michaelmurfy summed it up quite well in that thread (my emphasis)

All the "non technical" people I know on Quic have got support from friends / family / myself. I would put my parents on them for example but I would never expect a non technical person to sign up on their own accord as they're not the target audience. Instead, the large ISP's take their business.

@Davoid you seem like you have enough technical knowledge to be fine, and you can always double check anything here if needed.

That is incorrect.  I got support from Voyager on this, even though there was no obligation for them to do so, in contrast to Quic.  Using your parlance, Voyager is no just any ISP.

Thanks for the reference to my experiences from 2023.  It reminded me that my memory is not what it used to be but the OP can read of my experiences and make their all accordingly.
