I just got a quote for a 10kW solar home system that includes a Fox ESS Hybrid inverter.

After doing some reading, it seems to be pretty a decent option for a budget option.

But things like restrictions on adding batteries and some inflexibility (like no direct/limited control over SoC/export dumps etc) lead me to believe I will end up being frustrated over future expansion and capability.

What would you recommend in each of the Premium/Mid/Budget range tiers with a solution that has the most open flexibility? (I understand Fronius may be the most flexible in Premium tier)

Combo of Fronius with Victron is IMO the most open and flexible. You are not manadted to have internet access provided to either the Fronius or Victron inverter for your PV array system to be operable. There is no risk to the owner if either company goes bust, your monitoring goes bust with it. Benefit of both AC and DC (if needed) coupling is possible. You are not locked down with any proprietary battery setup. A good quality 48V battery works wonderfully well with Victron. Fronius has been around for 80 years and Victron has been around for 50 years. They are tried and tested.

is flexibility a good thing?

what's the odds that you will upgrade in the near future before the everything becomes incompatible ? the tech is evolving rapidly.

there is a good argument to be made of built one system and leave it. when it comes time for upgrade you rip out everything and replace it.

I have a bunch of plans for the future (like adding batteries/EV/custom Hot Water control/export battery power), and don't want to get locked into a vendor.

From a Fox ESS perspective, there is a red cross next to adding third party batteries (which are one of the components that will change a lot in the next couple of years)

Plus you know which site you are browsing ... most people here are into playing with technology, and expect a lot from it.

yes i know, its a weird thing to say on here, especially from me.

but as you say batteries will change a lot, and other things are rapidly changing. just be careful you don't pay extra for flexibility that you end up not being able to use. eg new batteries may not be compatible with old batteries or inverters etc, and your upgrade path ends up being a 2nd system along side the other.

Batteries will change some. The majority of the work is on the battery chemistry (e.g. Sodium).

The BMS takes care of things charge related (preventing overcharge etc) for that specific type.

Similar how Solar panels have changed a lot over the last few decades. But you can still plug in a bunch of 20 year old panels into it's own channel and it should still work.

And the same should be true with perovskite panels (when they become mainstream)
