I paid double that for standard LCD about 18 months ago! I won't upgrade though, not until 70" TVs are around $2K.

It's junk though...
'Direct LED' is pretty much the cheapest way possible for Samsung to make an LED TV. All the uneven backlighting you'd expect from a bottom end TV, with limited connectivity and a bulbous side profile to boot.
On the positive side, it does have have better sound the traditional super skinny Samsung's on the market.
