Hi,

Today I called the SKY for asking additional decoder for my parents room, and they said I must pay $90 for installation.

But my previous owner of the house already wired every room for sky, so all I need to do is just hooking them.

I even explained my situation but answer is simply impossible to having additional decoder without paying installation fee.

Is it really true? is there no other way to having additional decoder?

Maybe its a fee for sending out someone to plug it in...Its very technical you see....

I even asked her what if I visit the branch to pick the decoder up, the answer was same, not possible at all. It must delivered and installed by tech whether it need plug in single cable or wiring whole house.

I'm very disappointed SKY's customer service level at this moment.

Couldn't freeview coexists with sky? Doesn't H beam issue solved yet?

there's no other way. they are stick in the mud regarding fees. (very individual dependant though, sometimes they have secret "promotions" but only to certain retail advisors, so ... try calling up without disclosing yourself and say a friend got a second decoder added for free and check the response, say maybe they had wiring already ... but if there isnt a promotion you have to pay)

I guess with the fee you are effectively paying towards the capital cost of the decoder. The charge for MySky is also called an installation fee . There might be tax reasons for them as well.

hey actually i suggest getting mysky if you can afford it. one word - amazing! (record 2 channels and watch one prerecorded!)

Not yet, expect another 3-4weeks away.

As for getting out of the $90, they have never let anyone get out of that, just have to lump it.

One of the main reasons is to ensure that the 2nd decoder is physically installed in the same premises and that you're not just paying for an extra decoder and taking it to another property.

Wow, didn't thought about that trick before...

Just another question, if I ask to install MYSKY for $599, do I need to pay extra $99 for relocate my old decoder or, is it included?

I'm figuring out that if $599 included $100 for 4 month second decoder rental and $99 of installation fee, actual cost for MYSKY goes down to $399 (Still unbelievably expensive to rental, anyway).

Am I right?

No I am pretty sure you pay the extra to have the standard decoder relocated, it would be treated as a MySky upgrade and only that costing is applied, the fact that you are changing the site of the 2nd decoder is concidered part of that install.

From the way I read it, you will be doing the upgrade for $399 as you calculated.

As for the real cost, you will pay a similar amount for a DVR if not more, and unless you intend to cancel your contract with Sky you more or less have full use of the MySky as if it was your own. If it breaks down you get given a new one at no cost. The fact that you dont own the MySky is a little irrelivent in my view, as you are most likely commited to Sky as a broadcast provider for the forceable future anyway. Its a bit like having all your assets in a Family trust, you dont own your home, you dont own your car, but you have full access to them. Some folk find that hard to get their head around especially older folks, but in the end you have more advantages than disadvantages.

In that case, when SKY credit 4 month of second decoder rental fee when signing MYSKY, are they expecting us to pay another installation of $99 for relocate older decoder?

It seems like hidden cost to me, like we will subsidy something but it would worthless unless you buy something from us to activate it.

same thing here. I notice my room already has Sky feed coming into it, but i'll just have to lump the $99 fee. I'd love to get MySky, but can't justify the expense. $599 is still too expensive in my mind, i think once it drops to say $350-400 then i'd be tempted. Actually I've been hanging out for them to drop it for ages, but it still hasn't eventuated :-(

Another good thing about getting the installer around is that they can upgrade the LNB on the dish here, meaning that i'll be able to watch freeview and Sky on the same dish
