From the techspecs page

The HDMI standard sometimes includes copy protection encryption, such as commonly found on DVD players and some brands of set top boxes. When connected to these copy protected sources, the HDMI specification defines that Intensity cards cannot capture.

I think this answers that question for you.

Take a look at the techspecs page  - http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/techspecs/

It won't work with any channels that have enabled HDCP

Are there any other cards on the market that would work Sky HDi?

I would doubt it. The whole concept of HDCP is to stop people from doing exactly what you want to do.

You could always buy an HDCP stripper....

But with the cost quickly mounting, what exactly is it that you want to copy?  It has to be either sports or movies as they are the only programs Sky have in HD (excluding TV3 since you can get this with a DVB-T card and record direct).  If its movies then wouldn't buying a Blu-ray version be easier/cheaper/quicker?

Or is there something else you are trying to achieve?

The easiest way to get sky onto a HTPC in its proper format is to use the smartcard and tune in directly. There is a whole thread on it here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=84&TopicId=21481

I want to record the Warriors entire season next year, and also the Rugby League World Cup in a few months which will be in HD. Id like to record and save them to my hard drive so I can view them later without worrying about them taking 10% disk space on My Sky HDi. I also would like to record the Premier League in HD and the upcomming NZ vs AUS test series in Aussie and the 5 ODI's.  I love sports in HD and its a waste just watching them once it would be nice if My Sky had a 1 TB hard drive but until it does we have to find solutions to record our precious sporting memories in HD.

Well you might just be in luck then. Sky don't enable HDCP on their Sports channels at present, athough this might change

Can someone recommend a good "cheap" card that can record component?

The Hauppauge HD-PVR is the only unit on the market that can do component. It's also not cheap, expect to pay somewhere around US$250 for one.

Exactly, and talking of stripping HDCP is breaking copy-protection.  I'm sure this sort of stuff shouldn't be discussed on Geekzone?

I have Mysky Hdi. Prior to Hdi I had mysky 1 and used to archive stuff to a DVD recorder. This has now blown up. Can anyone recommend the minimum specs HTPC hardware I would need to capture S-Video to an HTPC from the HDi as it sounds as though HD archiving is out of the question....

Cheers,

Matt.

I've seen people talk about their backed up their DVD collection on their HTPC, which is also breaking copy protection. Just IMO as long as no specific products are mentioned/linked or suggestions to use it, then it fits in the borderline section.

Also out of pure interest, any information on what the filesystem(s) of PVR hard drives are? Not just the HDi but things like Tivo or just your average DVD recorder.

Tivo runs a linix filesystem... files are in a proprietry .ty format.

PVRs that require a smart card will have content encrypted, so no point trying to load it on anything as you won't be able to do anything with it (other than waste your time trying).
