I can't wait to upgrade. It's been a long haul with Chromecast.

Google Blog: Google TV Streamer offers an improved processor, double the memory and 32GB of storage for faster app load times and smoother navigation than previous generation Chromecast. And with 4K HDR with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, You can connect your Google TV Streamer to a Wi-Fi network, or use an ethernet port

+ threads and matter home support.

I don't believe there are any reviews yet, but neither of those matter very much if it performs well with good software.

My 2017 Apple TV 4k still works great even though it's old.

It has the same CPU as the Firestick 4K and double the ram. Supports AV1 and has an Ethernet port. I'm good with that as an upgrade.

The bonus is support for Matter and Threads. That's a good shot at making the TV the center of home automation. It will spur device and app development if they can get it inbuilt. It's good competition for Samsung.

I was hoping they were going to use the Amlogic S905X5 as it seems like a better SOC. Hopefully this device runs the UI at 4K and not 1080p.

The rumour is a version of the MT8696 which is more than powerful enough for 4k streaming and has the required AV1 hardware etc. Going to 4GB Ram should have more of an impact than a more powerful SOC but the software will be the determining factor IMO.

I gave up on the 4k Chromecast with Google TV as it was just too laggy compared to the Apple TV I was using on other TVs. Firesticks are even worse IMO.

Google TV Streamer USD$99 is available for preorder with free shipping to NZ from Amazon US with estimated arrival October 9th.

Total for me including GST was NZ$191 - https://www.amazon.com/Google-Streamer-Streaming-Entertainment-Porcelain/dp/B0D8WJYSF9?th=1&tag=geekzone-20

The official release date is September 24th. Google's release indication for Australia is "spring". It will be released in NZ eventually imo.

I was tempted to wait for the NZ or AU release because I suspect there are going to be retail launch specials. But, I need one fairly soon and the order from Amazon guarantees that.

For me the upgrade brings AV1, Ethernet Port, Remote Finder. Anything else is a bonus.

I've cancelled my amazon order :  ). Simultaneous launch in NZ for a Google product. I can't recall that happening before. That is really good news. Chromecast was eventually/is sold by Google in NZ so that does make sense. This one might or might not be official yet.

For a short time there was a pre-order button at PB? no longer.

PB has a free shipping offer and no order button yet

waiting for 24th...

Picked one up, UI is youtube is not as clear as it is on the xbox, and it is also ignoring the audio settings menu and only giving me dolby digital over HDMI to my TV, despite me having it set to no surround, or manual and turning dolby and DTS off.

Setup process was super super slow on it as expected from anything google.

Cant find how to stop it from closing youtube and going back to the default screen saver if I leave it idle for a while. I have the turn off set to never but seems that the ambient stuff cant be disabled, so if I leave the youtube UI sitting on a video I want to watch later, I will come back and its back on the homepage when I press something and it loses my place in the youtube app.

Need to solve those to retire using the xbox as my youtube machine.

its cheaper than a Shield, so it has that going for it 😉

wish nVidia would hurry along an updated Shield, but I'm not holding my breath
