Sony Pictures Home Entertainment US are to  release a box set of Frank Capra at Colombia directed films from the 1920's - 1930's. The set includes 19 films from those decades, plus 2024's Frank Capra: Mr. America documentary.. I have to admit that only three or four of the films are known to me and they are all Black & White with the old 1.33:1 and 1.37:1 aspect ratios with mono audio. I know the names of some of the actors, but that's as far as it goes for me. My question to users in this thread is; Does this set hold any interest for you?. I know that its all part of the history of filmmaking and many people have an interest in it, but would you buy this set?. Release date is November 19th. Amazon do not have a Pre-order page up yet so I don't know how much the set will cost (bet it's not cheap). I'm just interested to know if these old films will make it worthwhile for the effort that the studio has put in.

Nine of the films have both a standard 4K SDR and Blu-ray disc, the rest are Blu-ray only.

So This is Love (1928) - The Way of the Strong (1928) - That Certain Thing (1928) - Submarine (1928) - The Younger Generation (1929) - Flight (1929) - Ladies of Leisure (1930) - Rain or Shine (1930) - Dirigible (1931) - The Miracle Woman (1931) - Platinum Blonde (1931) - American Madness (1932) - The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932) - Forbidden (1932) - Lady for a Day (1933) - It Happened One Night (1934) - Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) - Lost Horizon (1937) - You Can't Take it with You (1938) - Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) and Frank Capra: Mr. America (2024).

From romantic pursuits to explosive action, from spectacular thrills to insightful social commentary, the FRANK CAPRA AT COLUMBIA collection features a wide variety of films that still feel fresh and timely today: the perfect collection of films for any mood or occasion! Then for fans of classic cinema, the scope of pre-code rarities to Best Picture-winning classics makes this set a must-own!

The 20 films in the FRANK CAPRA AT COLUMBIA COLLECTION represent Capra's earlier work at the studio through to the more well-known award-winning blockbusters, with many films making their long-awaited disc debut! The discs are included within a coffee table-worthy sleek outer box that opens to showcase the films inside. The set also includes several new commentaries from film historians, hours of archival special features, and the full feature-length 2024 documentary, FRANK CAPRA: MR AMERICA!

I'm unfamiliar with movies of this generation and I couldn't see myself spending what I'd imagine this set would cost to change that!

I think it's good the studios are preserving these films and offering them to those historians/ movie buffs that would appreciate it.

Celebrating 25 years, GALAXY QUEST comes to 4K Ultra-HD for the first time in spectacular HDR-10 and Dolby Vision and dynamic Dolby Atmos sound, a new Filmmaker Focus with director Dean Parisot, and hours of legacy special features. Years after cancellation, the stars of the television series Galaxy Quest cling to their careers. Galaxy Quest! Finally! Would have been nice to see them flesh it out a bit with commentary and additional features like the documentary. Beggars can’t be choosers I guess, I’ll still grab it. This has been a very long time coming.

Criterion are releasing No Country For Old Men for the first time in 4K.

Looks like their website doesnt ship to NZ so unless a local outfit imports, Amazon might be the only other way to get it here (if at all).

I had to pop in to Riccarton today to get some Aussie currency for my upcoming trip to Melbourne. As I was already in the Westfield Mall, I thought that I'd have a browse of JB Hi-Fi's 4K inventory, to see if I could find any of the Arrow imports that I've heard about from other NZ stores. Here is what I found.

The Last House on the Left

Weird Science

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

King of New York

Naked Lunch

Demons

There may have been more, but I didn't see any. Prices were around the $60 mark.

It was good to see that JB Riccarton are keeping their shelves well stocked with 4K titles.

Arrow Video's The Chronicles of Riddick 4K Ultra HD release  #3282283 is getting a lot of love for its faultless Dolby Vision transfer and its kicking Dolby Atmos audio. The package comes with three versions of the film on three 4K discs, including the Theatrical Cut on Disc One and Disc Three, and the Director's Cut on Disc Two. The general consensus is that Disc Three which includes the film in open matte (1.78:1) aspect ratio, is definitely the jewel in the crown of this set.

Arrow releases are Limited Editions and once they are gone they don't re-stock. Some titles hang around for years, whilst others disappear quite quickly. It seems that this title may be one that adheres to the latter.

Enjoy your trip mate. I've just returned and had a great time. I recommend packing some warm clothes, it was very cold - but if you're in Chch you're probably much hardier than us northern folk 😝

Got a small haul from a few JBs over there - Bridge over the River Kwai S.B. was the highlight. Someone recommended https://www.playmusicdvds.com.au/ and it was a great store, a lot of imports etc so it was pricey but I got a few bargains there.

It's still available from Arrow US direct US$35: The Chronicles of Riddick 4K

...and Amazon AU have the US release. Probably works out cheaper than Arrow direct, includes free shipping.

Just had a look on the map. Its literally a three minute walk from our hotel. I'll send wifey off shopping and have a nosey 😁

Were there many second hand 4K's available, and if so, what was the pricing like.
