It finally happened. The Lord Of The Rings 4K Steelbook set I had preordered a few months ago on Amazon US has been cancelled by Amazon. It was supposed to be sent I over a month ago but nothing was ever shipped. It looks like it happened to a lot of other people too, going by Reddit.

Oh well, I guess that frees up the money I had set aside for it. I currently have preordered steelbooks of Galaxy Quest, The Terminator, Gladiator, and - as of just a few minutes ago - Leon (which I preodered immediately after seeing it on Reddit having barely even glanced at the cover lol).

Yep same story here - Amazon US cancelled order. I had ordered the Hobbit set from imusic.co and that thankfully turned up.

Amazon UK has LOTR for pre-order delivery in March 2025 and its about $50 cheaper but whether it ever shows up is another story 😀

Just recently released in US cinemas (Sep. 26  in NZ); Transformers One is getting excellent early reviews. The animated film has a star studded voice cast and promises to be a hit for Paramount Pictures.

Already, Amazon US have a Pre-order up for the SteelBook, as do JBAU, but no release date as yet. We may be getting the same artwork as the US.

Disney/20th Century Studios are to release TWO SteelBooks in the US for the mega hit movie Deadpool & Wolverine. Featuring each of the superheroes. Ardent SteelBook collector's will have to double-dip or decide which superhero they prefer. As with Inside Out 2, the film will only be available on 4K in SteelBook format. This is the new direction that Disney are taking with their 4K releases and I expect that other studios will go that way too, as the collector base shrinks.

This film will not be released in Australasia, so look out for Pre-orders at Amazon (if they get them).

Regarding the Deadpool & Wolverine SteelBooks.
Karl Lock of JBNZ is looking at importing them, but just needs to make sure that the Blu-rays are not region locked. It will probably be cheaper to import them yourselves.

Jean Reno, Gary Oldman and Natalie Portman in her film debut, all star in this highly influential, seminal ‘90s action/thriller. Directed by Luc Besson, Leon is the controversial and unforgettable story of an unlikely friendship within a brutal and violent world. On returning from a shopping trip Mathilda finds that her abusive, dysfunctional family (and her beloved younger brother) have been slaughtered by a psychotic, drug dealing police officer. In fear for her life she takes refuge with her reluctant, mysterious and solitary neighbour. His name is Leon and he’s one of the world’s deadliest assassins. And while Mathilda begins to teach him how to live, Leon begins to teach her how to kill. EXTRAS: Theatrical and Director's cuts in 4K UHD - Interview with André Labbouz, technical director at Gaumont- Interview with Thierry Arbogast, cinematographer- Interview with Sylvie Landra, film editor- Interview with Alain Kruger, journalist

Instant pre-order!

I finally got around to checking out the open matte disc of The Chronicles of Riddick I received the other day. The picture is very good. I had my bluray copy playing on my XBSX and the 4K playing on my DP-UB820 and switching between them revealed just how much more of the scene was visible on the 4K. It's definitely the version I'll be watching in the future.

Are there any other 4K's that also offer an open matte version that are worth checking out?

Not sure how many "legal" open matte films are available, but some films that have been shown in IMAX theatres, such as Mission Impossible: Fallout, have dual aspect ratios where some of the action scenes are opened up to 1.90:1 which almost fills the screen and in the case of "Fallout" it looks amazing. Top Gun: Maverick is also one of those "hybrids" and many more. The Dark Knight is another.

There are some films which use the IMAX ratio for the full length of the film. I watched an IMAX version of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on Disney Plus and I thought that it looked way better than the 2.39:1 version which was available on disc. I think that several of Disney Plus' Marvel titles are available in the IMAX format. The Suicide Squad is available on 4K disc in the IMAX format also.

I'm sure that there will be many more, it's just a matter of seeking them out.

THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951) Classics Remastered

Australia: November 13th • New Zealand: November 13th

Starring Academy Award winners Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, The African Queen tells the timeless tale of two mismatched strangers joining forces in a common cause and finding love along the way. Meticulously restored from the original film elements, the story chronicles the burgeoning romance between Bogie's river rat Charlie Allnut and Hepburn's missionary Rose Sayer, as they reluctantly join forces to torpedo a German gunboat in war-torn East Africa. Directed by Academy Award winner John Huston, and filmed on location in the Belgian Congo, The African Queen is arguably one of the finest films ever made with one of the most legendary star pairings ever to appear on the screen!

Its a bit difficult to find out the specs for this film, but here is what I have gathered so far.

Distributor: All Interactive Entertainment

4K Ultra HD (1-Disc Set)

Video: 4K SDR

Audio: TBA (Probably Dual Mono)

Aspect Ratio: 1.37:1

Run Time: 105 mins
