Setup the box yesterday and i can confirm you can get the ondemand websites to work in a sideloaded chrome using a keyboard/trackpad combo. Its a little tough to use but gets you where you need to go, im not sure if my wife will think its easier though than just using that same combo but on the current htpc. I have tried using Matt's repo inside of the Kodi app without any great luck yet. Am actually thinking about just paying for plex pass too, it looks super awesome on the android tv for live tv/pvr and really its not a whole lot of coin to pay. I currently use Mediaportal as the backend but plex is looking a lot simpler for me needs (as one gets old, arsing about tinkering gets less cool)

The box is solid though, got the main apps i need setup and chrome sideloaded, i just wish tvnz and three would come to the party with offical apps for android tv. Its not like they have to modify their main ones much... im guessing its licensing though.

So after a week with the box ive pretty much decided to keep the main HTPC connected up. Although the mi does most things ok it doesnt do them great... Mainly tvnz and three ondemand. This is a deal breaker for the wife and even though windows is clunkier they do them great. Guess ill have to leave the mi on hdmi 2 and just swap to it for chromecasting or mucking around with a few streaming apps/light gaming.

It does look promising and is 90% of the way there, if only the android tvnz and three let you do hdmi out! that would be fine, using a keyboard is fine, just using chrome on the mi is a little to rubbish for the misses. At least it doesnt cost much and i now have a spare chromecast to give to my sisters family

Did you try setting up the freeview add-on through Kodi? TV3 on demand works good, and streamed Freeview in general also works.
Try Puffin TV for a browser, much better than chrome on the Mibox in my opinion.

Yeah i tried setting it up, even with kodi 18 i couldnt get the drm stuff to go. Live streaming is fine since i have a server with tvcards. Wife uses on demand loads even though she could use other services to get the same content she just likes it. Ill try that other browser and see how that runs. If the box simply ran a near full version of chrome browser that would be sweet as.
Otherwise ill follow the android tv quiet closely, for the price its a great platform

Ok so i see the three app now supports chromecast so that one is now covered. That will hopefully force tvnz to support it as well then it will be sweet

Pretty much came to the same conclusion, I setup the Mi box in lounge (that has HTPC) for the bedroom, ended up keeping Mi box in lounge and moving Chromecast from lounge to bedroom. Now I want another Mi box or Shield to replace the Chromecast.

I have a chinese market M3S MiBox running Kodi 17.2

The MiBox is set to 4k but Kodi seems to only register 1080P as max resolution, does anyone know if this is a Kodi limitation or other issue?

I've got a mini keyboard with trackpad around here somewhere (BT) so will pair with the mibox and see how it works for sky go, and sideload chrome.

(Ive got a usb mouse connected currently, and whenever I move it I get a cursor, skygo doesn't work that well, to scroll through the channels for some reason)

How did the experiment with Chrome go?

Chrome works ok, it defaults to mobile view which recommends you download the apps but you can change it to desktop version in the options. Its a bit funky though and seems resource intensive. Works though

O my, maybe tvnz and three read my negativity around on the internet. You can now chromecast from both apps, basically this resolves all of my issues with the mi box. Might have to look at it again

As per in the plex thread the wife is still after live tv in the traditional way. Plex pass with the dvr isnt really great for her so ill need another solution. Will try emby at some point this week and i also might look at setting up the live channels app with a m3u and running android n so she can try that with dvr support apparently. Anyone have the m3u's for nz? Do they come with a guide? Do they change much?

Failing that i guess ill grab a hd homerun and try the live channels app again like that. It is my side project though, she has the windows 10 htpc setup we have used for years to fall back on with just manually swapping between mediaportal, netflix, chrome (for on demand sites) using a mouse/keyboard

So I'm looking at an android TV box to replace my Windows 10 HTPC and ideally would like the nVidia shield, but this has cost as well as distribution issues for NZ... The Mi Box with the official ethernet adapter appears to fit my needs, effectively doing the following:

Content at 1080p
TVheadend client / kodi for live/recorded TV
Emby for movies from the Nas
Google play services
small & low powered
IR / bluetooth inputs
Android TV based and not mobile interface.

I've read that its a bit sluggish at 4K and smooth at 1080p but can someone confirm this for me as this will be the deciding factor, also can a harmony remote be fully configured to operate this as well as run the hot keys for Kodi Live TV?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Mine seems fine at 4k for what I have used it for which was just netflix and youtube. Not tried any massive rips on it yet.
