Basically that. If you want something super simple and 100% remote based/chromecasting then android tv work great. This is coming from someone who has successfully moved his wife over to it from a htpc/mouse keyboard combo of about 10 years.

I guess its if you want to do gaming and have well actual support and OS upgrades (if yes and yes then go shield) otherwise the mi works fine for all the streaming apps with a solid AC wifi connection. We just use the mi remote now as its CEC turns the tv on/off too. I have to manually turn the amp on but thats ok in the scheme of things

If you want to Chromecast I would avoid the MiBox 4k.  People's experience of casting to it have been mixed.

I've ended up buying Chromecast Ultra as well.

For the combined cost I could have bought a shield.

ah piss, my mi box remote just stopped working. Cant repair it or anything. No idea if its the box or the remote. Bluetooth seems fine on the mi box so its possible the remote is dead or the IR blaster/reciever for pairing isnt working

What happens if you hold the home & back button down for 5 seconds or so?

Does the MiBox show the paring screen?

and power off the box for 10 mins and try again if not.

Is anyone having issues with the google play music app in their MiBox 4K?

Mine brings up my collection. But when I try to play anything it skips through all the track titles in the album before reporting a file error.  I would appreciate any suggestion to resolve this issue.

Google play movies is working faultlessly when playing files I have bought or rented.

Pretty sure it uses IR to make the initial handshake based on my teardown of the remote and why it wants it so close when setting up. I thought this might be blocked since well kids, bananas, peanut butter etc. Seemed ok. (This could be the microphone though, it could be emitting a high pitch sound from the mi box for the pair too, no idea really, just guessing).

Ive done the hold down the two buttons, ive reset the mi box (i am on the april beta) and totally powered off the box/remote changed batteries etc. It really did just stop working out of the blue one day. Its 100% possible my 23 month old threw the remote against our wooden floors with some force and it wouldnt be the first remote (or phone) that has succumb to a small persons anger.

Purchased a new remote for about $15 NZ off ali , doesnt have the voice button though which i quite like :(

Doesn't work for me either, but in my case it is worse - says I have no music in my library yet on my phone and computer my library is there in Google Play (Music). Yes I am signed into the same Google account on all devices.

So i cant get the google home to control the mi box which is a bit of a bummer. Not sure if something is wrong with it or not. These settings are all random

Play music worked on mine sort of. Images not loading for many things and lots of not playble tracks when I last tried it on Wednesday.

well basically, new remote came, same problem, i banged the box hard against the wall in frustration and tried again with the og remote and low and behold it worked again. Something wonky with the pairing mode im guessing (which i still suspect is via IR or sound). All working fine again except i now have two remotes
