I've just been told that it doesn't support H.264 for live tv and that Linksys have been advised of this through official support channels as part of the Windows 7 beta testing. It also apparently not does support the AAC-LATM audio used here.

No word on if/when this could be fixed.

The xbox360 does work as an extender but does suffer from network dropouts that Microsoft are aware of.

Hi guys,

I've just tried running WMC on Windows 7 to watch Freeview, it scans the DVDT channels fine (it comes up with 12) but when I go to live tv it comes up with this error "DECODER ERROR - The video decoder has either malfunctioned or not installed, please restart Windows Media Center or Windows 7"

I installed the Cyberlink CD that came with my Hauppage 4000 to see if the decoders on that would make it work but no.

Anyone else had this problem?

A couple of things to check:

1.  Check your using build 7000 - the decoder error was common on the earlier builds.
2.  Make sure you don't install any other codecs.  Many are known to cause issues.
3.  Check your using Hauppauge drivers 4.6b - which are the latest released drivers.  These need to be installed manually, select the "Drivers Only" option, and it should update the base level drivers.

Other than that It should work out of the box with build 7000.

If your're getting this error my suggestion is to start with a clean build (ie rebuild) and try again.

OK, so I've lost touch a bit with the hole EPG thing, but after reading the last three pages I am even more confused.  Ever since installing build 7000 I have been very happy with the EPG.  I am lucky enough to have a dish and sat card as well as HD dual turners etc, so I could update the EPG with the Sat card and copy it to the HD channels - worked great and recorded series etc.

Recently, it has been dropping the settings and not recording, so we tag it up again and end up 3 recodings of the same programe recording once from each source (SD cards as well)

Something has changed and I have read most of the forums both here, ozzie and TGB etc.  Most people acknowlege the probelm and look towards epgstream etc to fix it.

To my way of thinking (backwards I know) why can I not use the Sat EPG like before?  I was happy with it and it worked.  Surely MS has changed something and not it drops the settings.

From what I read MS even now about this - are they going to fix it??

Yes MS have found the issue. It occurs when a broadcaster changes the EventID for a show that has already been assigned one.

SoggyChips: I hate to ask a potentially silly question, however.
How does this behave with a meda extender such as a 360?
Watching freeview through 360 in addition to everything else would be nice and free stuff up

(says the man without a 360 and is still waiting for PlayTV to come out for the PS3 in the lounge)

I got around to trying it with Windows 7 Beta on my laptop and the 360 as an extender tonight and it seems to be working perfectly. You can even initiate recordings from the xbox.

Under Vista my laptop wasn't fast enough to play HDTV consistently (ran out of CPU) but under Windows 7 it copes fine. W7 likes the Pinnacle PCTV USB tuner, but the driver for its infrared sensor doesn't work.

Looks great - how about tv through the media center interface? Also, how did you get sky onto your pc and can you view one sky channel and record another sky channel at the same time?

Is this the same issue causing recording problems in Vista MC?

Wonder if there will be a fix for Vista as well...?

Might be a problem if you're using ver 7022 and below... see http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/343857.aspx for solution...

Works fine under Win7 and a lot more versatile than MCE :)

Can you watch live TV on it, ie say a Sky HD channel?  If so can you record live TV on it?

If you can stream that via MCE to a 360 then my opinion of versatility may be somewhat over-rated, as you _can_ do it via the ps3mediaserver through VLC but it's so complicated that for all intents and purposes the answer is "no". If you want TV functionality on the PS3 then your only real option is (importing) the Play-TV until such time as MCE starts supporting UPnP/DLNA standards (i.e. - probably never).
