How did you get the GZ1000 at $2188, can't go into the store to haggle and only order online?

Not sure if it's ok to reply to this thread or meant to start a new one.

I've been looking lately and was after something cheap and thin as possible to be wall mounted behind projector.

I went to a shop to look at a Panny 58" hx700z $1800 (I can now get it for $1500), ended up buying a Samsung 65 q70ta for $2800. Way more than wanted to pay! Luckily I can get a refund if I change my mind which I will do as it's in Noel Leeming storage.

Lately I've been looking at the older Panasonic 65 gx850 $2189 (appears to be really slim), 65 (or 58 as above) hx700z $2195
I've also considered the lg 65 nano 80 $2150.

Any advice, tips, suggestions would be great please.
Thanks

They might not be Auckland based. In my experience with NL its been very hit and miss in terms of discounts. I recall they trying to sell a display 65C9 at a discounted price of $4695...

From memory the GX850/HX700Z and Nano80 has some sort of local dimming feature in it, whereas the Q70T does not.

The 2020 Samsung changed on not only the model letters but also the numbering. (i.e. 2019 Q70R is 2020 Q80T, 2019 Q60R is 2020 Q70T).

Interestingly enough the Q70T without its local dimming feature rates higher on rtings than the nano 8(5) variant in the states.

Maybe its due to the VA vs IPS panel?

Did you want any specific feature from the TV set?

Do you think the eol Panasonic oled 55 gz1000 will get any lower, so tempting, but would prefer the hz1000 or hz1500 but they will probably be ages away from any really good discounts?

It's the race between prices dropping and stock disappearing. a 55" OLED (arguably as good as the HZ) at that price is a steal. The lowest 55 C9 pricing was around the $2600 mark from memory.

Some stores ends up with 2-3 year old model TVs on display and yet the pricing is still 'bad' on them, the Pana EZ, Samsung QxFn series... etc

Thanks for the reply and info, really great.

I'm not after anything specific really as most tv we watch is just tipping point, the chase etc (so tvnz on demand app would be good). Trying to be conservative budget wise as have bought an Epson TW7100 for movies (hence the 58" panny).

A Slim tv would be good so that the projector screen is as far away from seats as poss (GX850 looks slim). Do you know the difference between the GX850 and HX700z? I couldnt find much on the latter.

The LGs look nice, and have good remote / OS

Any of those TV's will be fine for just watching regular broadcast TV, and you will probably be best to go with an IPS panel if you are watching general TV from multiple positions.

The GX850 is a mid-range 2019 LCD model, whereas the HX700 is a entry-range 2020 LCD model. The HX800 and HX900 are the closest comparison as the 2020 middle range LCD models. They all look like IPS panels, except for the HX700; the difference will be in picture processing, local dimming implementation, and refresh rate, but they will make very little effective difference in use, especially since you already have a projector. I'd go for the newer TVs if price is all the same, since Panasonic doesn't seem to support their older TVs with newer features. If the GX850 is significantly cheaper though, I'd go for that.

It looks like the HX800 and 900, and the GX850, all have the HCX Pro processor as well, so probably have better picture processing. The GX850 and the HZ900 also have higher refresh rates.

The LG TVs have one-of-the-best OSes for ease-of-use and newer apps. I'd probably buy an LG TV if price and features are on par with a Panasonic TV. The Nano80/81 doesn't have support for Dolby Vision or HDMI 2.1 though.

Edit: I see you have already purchased something; I think while the Samsung is a better TV than the other choices, since it is only secondary to your projector I would save some money and go with one of the Panasonic or LG options.

I received an HZ1500 yesterday; it is a step up on the GZ1500. Sound is better, and motion handling seems quite a bit better. I went from 65 to 55 - if I hadn’t wanted to do that probably not worth the money - the GZ is pretty good.

Thanks for the info. Ive just cancelled the Samsung, will get a refund.

I am keen on the GX850 as it seems to be the better tv (slimmest as well), but the 65 HX700Z is $2050 & the LG 65 UN8160 (not the nano sorry) even cheaper at $1770. I cant find any reviews on the LG though.

Hmm a bit of a dilemma, any tips / preferences welcome! cheers

I'd probably lean towards the GX850 for your use; normally I'd consider the HX700z because it's a VA panel, but, especially since it's just gonna be a generic use TV, it's better to have the higher spec'd GX850. The UN8160 is quite low range from what I can see, so personally I would just spend the extra couple of hundred for either Panasonic.

I would say it's the VA panel, they do seem to weight the contrast quite highly, and the uniformity and brightness are quite a lot better too. I've found that a crappy LD implementation (which is pretty much anything apart from high zone count FALD) is almost worse than none at all; I find my LG's one to be quite distracting.

I do find relying on their overall rating can be a bit hit-and-miss, but their reviews are some of the only ones thorough enough to give you an idea of each TVs strengths and weaknesses to decide whether it would work for you.

BlinkyBill (or anyone else) what are your overall impressions of both Panasonic OLED's, had you compared to the similar LG/Sony/Philips OLED models?

From other reviews it doesn't sound like much difference between the GZ to HZ apart from a couple of new features?

The Philips Ambilight 804/805 model also sounds very good?

Thanks

Reviews say Panasonic OLEDs are probably the best for 2020. GZ is inferior (I’m not an expert) in sound and motion blur to the HZ. The GZ is a fantastic TV, I’m the sort of person though who prefers the latest and not the cheapest. If I didn’t want to leave the TV for the new owners of the house, I wouldn’t have bought the HZ.

I didn’t compare the Pana against other models, indeed I didn’t even look at the Pana before buying it; I bought it based on how good the GZ is.

That’s probably not so helpful!
