But looks like I will have to look at other brands for LED/LCD or get one of the much hyped Panasonic Plasmas :)

The hype is well deserved.  If you have an eye for the best available PQ, with lowest amount of reflections, you can't beat a Panny Plasma :)

Picture quality I have seen raves about, and it makes me seriously interested in the P50ST50Z. Reflections? I am guessing you mean glare etc. Isn't the Panasonic a glossy screen?

The Philips 9707 (not really any reason to talk about it when it comes to NZ; since it would have to be a private import and I am not THAT keen) has an anti-glare screen which have gotten good grades.

Yes, but it has an anti-glare treatment which is very effective.  Have a look at this video on YouTube where it shows "improved light blocking effect":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-09HWuvTZsg

Having looked at this type of screen side by side with LED/LCD, the reduction in glare from the ceiling lights in the store was very obvious.

I have a Philips LCD - about 8 years old now (cost me a fortune way back when). It still goes great. It has been relegated to bedroom duty, but it gets used every day.

The Philips Commercial Panels (signage displays) are still sold here in NZ, as are their hospitality TVs, they are really good units with an awesome set of features.

The ST60 will hopefully start filtering into retail next month and unless you're a gamer, or have a restrictive budget, then they would make a worthwhile update. They have acheived deeper black levels than last year's VT50 and have an improved anti-reflective filter, better calibration controls. They take a real back-step in gaming reponse times over the ST50 unfortunately.

Yeah, I see that they were "released" in february. THe old ST50 model is now gone from noelleeming.co.nz and harveynorman.co.nz.

Do you recommend any dealership over another - or to avoid any of them?

They're all here...

http://www.harveynorman.co.nz/tv-and-audio/tvs/?subcats=Y&features_hash=V257

Smiths City has one of them here too...

Apart from that, not much in the way of 50 series Panasonic's.

Ah thank you. I must have overlooked the "3D ready plasmas" last time I looked.

Found the ST50 now. http://www.harveynorman.co.nz/pansonic-50-full-hd-3d-ready-plasma-tv.html

But the ST60 should be out in time for my arrival (august). So will probably go for that.

I am guessing the gaming difference is fps. What is the difference between ST50 and ST60?

you can add jb hifi to the list of dealerships too. http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/
also dick smith: www.dse.co.nz

which one to use? depends on who you can negotiate the lower price from ;)

(or if you don't like negotiating, wait till a 'long weekend' and then they all have sales)

I thought LG and Philips both made panels together, or they are owned by one another. So LGs could be similar to the philips ones.

My Dad's Philips 50" (or so) LCD TV had the sound fail when it was three years old. The retailer wouldn't fix it, and they'd lost the receipt, so nothing could be done. I wouldn't buy Philips.

Between 16 - 32ms on the ST50 and around 48 - 64ms on the ST60.

Wow, that is a big difference. Wonder why that is, would expect the screens to get faster not slower.

not so much the seed of the screen is it? More the lag time between when the frame leaves the game console and when it is displayed. Normally comes down to the image processing that goes on and normally the game mode on the TV disables as much of this processing as possible. I think.

As for the Panasonic plasmas. I have a 50" VT30. I got it on a run-out deal when the xx50 series was coming in and almost a year later I'm still amazed by the incredible picture it produces. Just been watching David Attenborough on Freeview (1080i) Just stunning!

I used to have decent Samsung LCD but never looked back. You do have to watch out for image retention. If I look hard enough I can still see an Olympics 2012 logo. Actually don't watch out for image retention it will bug you when you spot it.

And it's not great for day time viewing. But it's all worth it!.
