Same issue with a TX-NR509 but I bought mine in UK just before returning to NZ. Since repair was UK / Euro Onyko responsibility I got them to send me the replacement board dirctly which I swapped myself (very simple) rather than pay to ship to Avalon who also said I would have to play import duty on the board.

I had a 509 for two years and it started to play up, I didn't do any research and put up with it.
I did a firmware upgrade and the thing just wouldn't produce sound at all.

Anyhow Avilon repaired the unit for free for me, but Onkyo will never again get a purchase from me.
I previously had a Yamaha for over 10 years, it never once missed a beat, sold it for a good amount as well.
I'll be getting a Yamaha if I can find one I like next - probably a couple of years away, but it won't be another Onkyo reciever.

i had the onkyo 606 and the hdmi board failed on that. Had it fixed and all good.

Couple of years later, I figured they must have fixed the issue , and upgraded to the 609..... 3 months back the hdmi board failed on the 609.

I don't know if this is very common to fail because the guys in JB hifi were totally unaware of this problem. (i spoke with their service guy so thought he might have known).

Anyways, onkyo fixed it just fine but I will not buy onkyo again--- the reason i bought is because they had the best combo of features/price/audio quality.

My 609 died literally 1 day out of the warranty period. I bought the reciever off JB and they referred me to Avalon. I had so much trouble with Avalon and it took 2-3 weeks for them to finally agree to the fix. I was very close to lodging a claim with the small claims court. I even discussed this with the manager Vaughan (who was a right arrogant prick) and eventually he agreed to fix free of charge, after JB interveened. JB all along was happy to get the reciever fixed for free.

Vaughan at Avalon was spouting on about how servicing the recievers is standard practice and lots of their customers get their techs to pull their recievers apart every year and clean out the dust blah blah blah. Got me wound right up.

So after that experience I have sworn off Onkyo and Avalon for good. I bought my full Kef HT setup through them as well. Glad to see everyone else isn't having the same issues I did.

The receiver was away for 3-4 weeks to replace the pcb, however, there are still some issues I am experiencing.

In addition to the failure to acquire an ip address via dhcp (manually entered address works fine), twice there has been a loss of audio over HDMI. When this happens, the loss is audio is on at least 2 of the hdmi inputs, however, fm audio still works. Changing hdmi inputs does not fix the issue, and, there is a PCM icon displayed regardless of audio format sent to the receiver. Turning the receiver off and on via the remote does not resolve the issue, however, switching the receiver off at the wall and then turning it back on does fix the issue.

Was also looking at the Yamaha VS677 , Harvey Norman had a run out sale on them, and I guess it would match my Yamaha NS-777's and YST-SW315...

What's your thoughts on the VS677?

It's a good amp - known to be one of the more reliable units out there.
It depends what you want out of your receiver of course... but if I'd had reliability issues, the first thing I'd look for in a replacement is an amp that keeps on working.

I also have the TX-NR609, HDMI board failure about 6 months ago. Took it back to JB and got it sorted by Avalon who were actually pretty helpful. Managed to get the labour fee waived by JB without trying very hard.

Next unit will probably also be a Yamaha, or some other company who can manage to write a half decent interface application along with produce decent hardware.

Yeah that's the one :)

I took too long though and Harvey Norman sold their last unit this past week. Now looking at the upcoming RX-V579 as it also supports HDCP 2.2 for some future proofing.

My only reservation is that it only does 80W per channel vs 100W on the Onkyo... hope it can drive my speakers without having to be cranked up too much all the time.

In my searching the Denon AVR-X1100W also came up, appears to be fairly comparable in specs but I don't know much about their entry level receivers, their high end ones seem to get great reviews. Know much about them vs Yamaha? - Mainly used for listening to music

Just an update on this. The above issue happened a few more times (thankfully for me and not the Wife), so I took the receiver back to JB Hi Fi and they were really good about it. Without me even prompting, suggested that there were too many issues with it and gave me the option of either having it sent away again for free, or, store credit and VIP price on a different receiver.

So, I decided to give Onkyo another try and got the NR-636 (for $710 less the price I paid for the old one). I know the NR646 is coming, however, I'm not sure what the price and timelines would be and the 636 is still an upgrade (1 less hdmi in) over what I had.

Happy enough after 2.4 years to have the full cost of the receiver back to put against a new one.

Bottom line, JB Hi-Fi looked after me well.
Still willing to give Onkyo a try with their price / performance ratio and the backup of our consumer laws.

Got my TX-NR515 back from JB yesterday, haven't had the chance to test it but Avalon replaced the HDMI board for free, even though they were unable to reproduce the issue when they tested it.

Was overall a good experience getting that fixed... now hopefully I can find a buyer for it...

Anyone want it for a good price?
