I would avoid paying extra just to get smart features, as Sony can remove them in the future. My previous Sonysmart TV is now just a dumb Tv due to the removal of its advertised smart features. Instead put the money into a media device to connect to it

not as easy with android tv. with samsungs tizen os, lgs webos, panasonics firefox os, yes they can easily remove apps. but with androidtv, its by google, sony etc dont make a heck of a lot for it, its mostly android and other app developers. so i would go with android tv if you had the choice.

It would still have an expiry date based on however long it is supported for. Unlike a media device which you can swap out when the hardware reaches the end if it's life. The life of the Tv would be a lot longer than the androidr TV part of it.

What happens when it goes out of support? There is a way to side-load the apps on a Android TV. Pretty much anything that works on your Tablet can be loaded on the TV now using side-load. I don't think that will ever be available in any other TV OS. I recently installed my CCTV viewing app (although it was not available for Android TV) by side-loading (google it) and it works flawless.

yeah in 5 years u may need a new tv, its not like the old samsung tv os's that only really lasted 2-3 years.

but in 5 years, there will be 8k so you will want to upgrade anyway :P

Does make for an interesting discussion.

You're still paying roughly $500 more for the brand name / smart features (when both are on sale/normal price)

eg equivalent Veon from the Warehouse.

Pity NZ doesn't have access to those Hisense options like Australia looks to have.

my veon 1080p 55" i bought last year really put me off buying another veon. luckily that one is just for a kids lounge, so i dont have to stare at it.

and boy does it have a terrible speaker. my lg and sony 2016 models have surprisingly really good speakers.

Agreed, the sound is simply rubbish. Let's them sell you the speakers upsell like via a soundbar. You pay extra for the speakers they used to include in the TV...

We have the LG. I've been impressed with the smart TV functionality of WebOS. There are apps for Netflix, Lightbox & Amazon Video.

There are obviously more than that, but I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of the last two. Especially considering without the apps, I'd be forced to Airplay content from those services.

An Android TV is slightly different to smart TVs of old. It comes with built-in Chrome cast and voice activated Google searches. As Google services, you would reasonably expect these to be updated over time.

not every sony tv has a mic in the remote i found out. my 65" does, my 55" does not. kinda annoying, but not a huge deal, since 99% of the time I just use netflix/plex.

i just wish other tv manufacturers went with android tv, easily the best TV OS out there.

I recently bought a Sony KD-49X7000D and found, much to my surprise, that you can simply plug in a USB mic (I used a Logitech camera/mic) for voice operation. Even more surprising, I found it would work from my armchair across the room!

The problem with these TVs they have a terribly wide set of feet. You have to wall mount, buy another set if feet or a new TV table unit.
