Which is why I used Slingbox it is HD depending on your Broadband speed.

The Sky modulator was first designed and sold during the SD days and is still widely used today apparently.

But if you want HD, Slingbox is a simple install. The hard bit is ethernet wiring if it is not near your Sky box (the 350 is not wireless - other later models are).

If you go to the Slingbox Answers Forum you can read about a couple of Kiwis doing what you want to do.

A Slingbox 350 sold on TM recently for $45. They can be bought on Ebay and landed here for under $100.

My  set-up used Slingbox 350 (ethernet hard wired) and a WDTV SMP  which has the Slingbox app built in.

The Slingbox 500 has HDMI in - note possible issues with HDCP.

Just to clarify - the WDTV plugs into the HDMI on your second TV (in 2nd lounge or patio or garage or office) and acts as the 'catcher' for the Slingbox stream using the Slingplayer App (from the HD component output from the MySky set-top box and the Slingbox 350).

Yeah just looked up the 500 - nice but still a bit pricey.

I have a homeline-AV ethenet adapter at the sky box. It seems fast enough for streaming HD to the roku.

Yeah that $45 for a local Slingbox 350 was a bargain.

Slingbox is a way to do it pretty painlessly and have HD and remote control.

I have viewed my Freeview via my 350 from Tauranga to Hamilton and it looked fantastic on my Sony tablet.

Thanks. When I put "slingbox" into trademe's search it "corrects" it to "slingbot" and there's nothing I can do to prevent it! Grrr!

Do the Ebay route. I bought my 350 there - power supply is 220/110 so only a plug adapter needed.

They come up occasionally on TradMe but they are everywhere on Ebay.

Just check - are you still getting a component feed from the Sky box?

NOTE: The Slingbox M1 (newer model) does not work with the WDTV. The 350/500 do. (I have both).

This may help:

Have not used the Component output for a while. Prev TV was component and I had to find a Scart-Component cable which are probably now rare. The thing I don't know is if it will allow HD from both HDMI and Scart-Component at the same time. But as you say, it's cheap enough to just give it a try and see.

Thanks

John

What comes out the mySky HD component isn't HD even on most HD channels, e.g., TVNZ1, TVNZ2, +hrEE. It is 576i. The newer legacy box replacement boxes only have composite out (+ HDMI) which apparently looks very bad.

That's disappointing!

When purchasing a Slingbox from overseas, is there any issue with regionalisation? Or will any US model work ok in NZ?

For Freeview I use a Vantage box. It is older and earlier,  but has no Freeview branding and produces 1080i from its component outputs.

I assume the lack of Freeview buy-in means it does not have to conform to the non-HD output requirement.

There are others too.

Slingbox can deliver 1080p - but it will obviously need a HD input. When I did this several years back with My Sky the hardest part was getting the remote to work.

But the link earlier here shows this is easy once the right codes have been uploaded and the seller at TM was also using this as a 'Sky solution'.

The only issue with a US Slingbox is the NZ Freeview programme guide will not show here.

You can get an HD Freeview image and remote control it, but the Freeview guide will not show. (NOTE you will need a HD Freeview component input).

I used my Tivo with the 500 and HDMI.

Or just add a HDCP accepting HDMI to component adapter infront of the slingbox. My understanding was they avoided HDMI on the earlier ones because of the US content industry liking to make hassles for people.

One other way which is fiddly. Is to use a Belkin @TV and mirror the tablet to Chromecast.

The Slingbox 500 has HDMI in and HDMI out as well as wifi so would greatly simplify the wiring from skybox to slingbox and slingbox to main tv (if it doesn't cause all sorts of HDCP headaches).

HDMI works perfectly with my Tivo. Just use the component outputs as well on the 500 (Slingbox recommends this anyway) and suck it and see.

It will do what you want and with the WDTV is little more than an app on on your screen.

NOTE: The Chromecast function built into the Slingplayer app is unreliable.
