I do wonder if the DSE TV is branded though. The imagery says not, bit I'm too snobbish to want a TV with "Kogan" on it in my lounge!

Hmmm,

The website is .co.nz and they are saying the price already includes GST. Therefore as far as I am concerned it is a NZ sale, GST inclusive. There's nothing on the sale page that says otherwise and there's no link on the product page to your GST info. If however it was sent from Australia and stopped at customs with a demand for GST and their handling/collection fee, I would just refuse it and get the credit card company to reverse the charge for false advertising and non-delivery.

But it's a good discussion. Has anyone actually ordered an item worth more than $500 from the "new" DSE?

I would contact dse directly. they may already pay the import taxes when you buy something. similar to how ebay often does.

TV arrived yesterday, mixed emotions, it looks great, has a nice recess on the back for inputs which also fits chrome cast nice and flush, the tv is barely 2 inches thick so looks great up on the wall.

I possibly have a dud as cannot get broadcast tv, it shows weak signal (other tv's on same UHF aerial give strong reception) also there is intermittent bursts of static coming from the speakers regardless of volume, very noticeable in a quiet room, undetectable in an ambient environment. I will contact TWL to discuss issues

I haven't yet played any 4k content through it but @ 1080P it is very acceptable, menus etc are very limited so tweakers might feel a little neglected, overall I'm happy

Very impressed with the Online CS team, 5 minutes on hold, spoke to a very apologetic person who arranged for a new replacement to be delivered free of charge and collection of my less than perfect one, no back and fro's or trying to weasel out, i would be surprised if the other local big brands would be as easy and efficient to deal with

As far as I understand Veon is still Sanyo but different name on it. Still sold as Sanyo in the USA

Yes that's been my limited experience. Compare to JBHifi - they do have 3 yr warranty (none the 12 month BS some try to get away with - completely invalid under NZ consumer protection law). However with JBHF you have to lug the TV back for evaluation and either repair or replacement, meanwhile you have no TV for weeks and they still have your munny!

TWH can do this because they absolutely screw their suppliers and pass some of that benefit on to the customer. I would never want to be one of their suppliers.

Bang for buck you can't go wrong, skin tones on freeview can look a little washed out at times but probably more the quality of the broadcast program than anything else, haven't had a chance to stick any 4K or even BD through it yet. One weird thing is that under HDMI inputs some of the picture controls are greyed out but available on freeview i.e. contrast colour and brightness sharpness but not tint, you can adjust colour temp through another menu though. overall it is a very basic tv designed for the masses, and i'm guessing majority of the punters will be more than happy. The actual aesthetic of tv and materials used are quite nice, the back is a glossy grey colour similar to the old Samsung S3's, its barely 2 inches thick at its thickest part and less than an inch thick elsewhere, the bezel is a matt charcoal colour, hanging on the wall it does not look like $1k tv

Replacement tv only arrived only a few days ago, no issues with tuner this time around, gets a strong signal. I was using the USB to power the chromecast but this seems to introduce random static through the built in speakers so using a separate power supply eliminated that issue

It's a $1k tv, i don't think it has the picture quality of a $3k tv, but it probably is 3/4's the way there, be realistic and you will be pleasantly surprised, a car analogy would be that it's an SS commodore not a Audi RS6

Actually after watching some 4K demo vids on the fancy big screens at JB Hifi on the weekend i went home and fired up the laptop into the Veon to play some Youtube 4k clips.Whilst not a true side by side comparison the Veon actually does a pretty fantastic job when you feed a decent signal into it

Hi Wade,

Thanks for taking one for the team. You're doing the lord's work.

Couple of quick questions:

1. Does the unit emit a lot of heat once it has been running for a while? Or is it relatively cool to the touch?

2. How bright is the panel? Does it stack up well in a room full of light? Or does the image fade when the ambient room light is too high?

3. You said you eventually plugged in your laptop/computer. Does that mean you rendered the desktop at 4K? How did the desktop look? Was the picture sharp? Was there any noticeable lag or artefacts on slow moving high resolution imagery (tearing)?

4. Lastly, what are the panels viewing angles like? Specifically from extreme left or extreme right? Can you still see the images on the screen OK?

Might get a couple of these if they're decent. The service from TWL already has me 90% sold.
