The panasonic australia website has details on the models landing there, they start in May/June... might be some indication about the models in general though not the same of course due to Freeview.

JimmyLizar: I reckon wait a bit. Although it would be good to know stock numbers...

Just went down and got our new TH-50PY800 from Harvey Norman in Manukau for $2750 including delivery this morning. They had lots of stock but the other big chains didn't have a lot. Dick Smith had none after their Queens Birthday sale when they had them down from $3499 to $2974. I'm very happy.

Hi, Looking at buying First HDTV and looking at the 42" version. Been into Smiths City and Norman Ross, have been offered the

TH-42PY800 for 2098
TH-42PZ850 for 2500

Now the questions which I would really appeciated some help with;

The sales man tried to tell me the PY has a completly different panel to the PZ, and that the PY is a much better blah blah blah because he put them side by side...
Any truth to this?

Is this pretty much the best bang for buck on the market at the moment?

Are you in a DTT area?

Do you have (or intend to get) MySkyHDi? With FTA HD channels now all carried by Sky there is less imperative for an inbuilt tuner. However what happens if Sky decides to no longer carry FTA HD signals when the current commercial agreements expire?

As for the quality difference, having auditioned the PY and PZ side by side with a blu-ray source I couldn't see much difference. I'm trying to remember if the PZ has a better non-reflective coating on the screen. And optical audio out (not sure about the PY).

Personally I prefer the inbuilt tuner to another STB.

Its price is reflective of the fact new models are imminent.

Ive seen the PY & PZ side by side in store. I reckon the PZ has less reflections showing...which points to a better coating.

Just re-read your original post. Since you are getting more than one TV I would suggest inbuilt DTT tuners are a good idea so there's no fighting over the MySky remote to watch an FTA HD program.

Anyone looking should keep in mind these PY/PZ models are on their way out so make sure you get a deal. G10/S10 are starting to appear on the Panny site, and they are brighter, use less power, smaller bezels and thinner.
Only downer is no wee subs on the better models like the current range.

Only you and your wallet can answer that.
Improvements I would say will be incremental - not like the big jump from HD ready to Full HD.
There will always be something better on the horizon in the AV world. When the PZs came out (was it this time last year?) the 50" was $5300 and the 42" was $4500. And that was when it was 78 JPY to the NZD. I expect these new ones will be similar, but it will depend how keen Panasonic is to 'shift some glass'.

thanks for the comments,

went in today to get a 42" PZ850, and the sales men showed me the series 6 samsung lcd, and pushed the LCD technology. More reserach required. The samsung was cheaper but every seams to thing these panasonics are the cats whiskers.

What series Samsung. Because I think they are up to series 9.

There is a Plasma vs LCD guide at the head of this forum. It hasn't been added to since 0ct 08 but a lot of points are still valid.

I have re-read the lcd vs plamsa thread. Its a good resource. Explains alot why the LCD appeared to be blacker blacks etc in the store, as it was highly lit, apart from the Samsung LCD's which were in a little alcove. The new Panasonic's sound awesome, but the missus is impatient and I dont think i could convince her to wait.lol.
