To connect to the component video inputs on your analog HDTV If your HDTV does not have an HDMI, connect the HDTV here

Note: If you connect your HDTV via component video, you may not receive some high definition content or you may receive some high definition content in standard definition

that just means anything they need to protect via hdcp will show in sd because they dont want any unauthorised recording or w/e of thier hd broadcasts

just so you know its possible to get around hdcp with a box that you plug in the feed and it pretends to be hdcp compliant and spits out an unprotected signal the other end
so no probs there

google it

im sure you can get hdmi - component converters aswell
most new home theatre systems should be able to

again google it

if component is really that important to you
in my case im still wondering since my projector only has 1 hdmi port and thats taken by the ps3

About HD over component, i suppose you could almost call downscaled 576i HD compared to the youtube quality of some of sky's SD broadcasts.

It is my understanding that clients have to effectively provide a certificate to the equipment providing the hdcp feed. It is also my understanding that any company that flouts the hdcp rules, by doing what the equipment above does, will have its certificiate revoked.

So when you go and try play a new blu-ray movie it will suddenly stop working with your blu-ray player/hd sky decoder/other hdcp equipment

I won't be using component, just HDMI and Optical Audio.

Have you considered getting an AV receiver with multiple HDMI inputs or a HDMI switch?

Am also getting hacked off with crappy 4:3 feed for sports... F1, MotoGP (is apparently filmed in 16:9), rugby league, cricket, tennis etc etc. Hopefully Sky will have the rights to pull HD content of ESPN HD, but i'm not so confident about that. The IRL picture quality is poor to say the least.

You're not wrong... The MotoGP live stream is mostly 534*300 WMV3 @ 590Kbps. I run it from my laptop via the standard monitor out port to my Sony 32" LCD running full screen @ 1360*768 using Real Player which seems to upscale better than WMP. Switch to the Sky feed and the image is not sufficiently better to make up for it being only 4:3. For the main race the stream is available in 720*404 @ 1200Kbps which looks just like TV. I noticed on Sunday's TV1 Motorsport that their highlights package was in widescreen so I did a comparison and couldn't tell the difference. Just shows how much Sky is compressing I suppose.

AFAIK all the sports you mention are filmed (?) in 16:9 and most are HD.

I don't have HDMI on my Fujitsu plasma but have DVI - any idea if I will be able to get HD from the Sky HDi with a HDMI to DVI cable?

If the plasma DVI is HDCP compatible then you should be OK . You'll just need a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable.

i blew the budget on the project, tablet pc and ps3 ala 5k so its kinda out of the question, if i could have watever one i wanted however id definately be getting the sony es watever you call it top of the range 7.1 surround reciever thingy
i know what it is i just cant be fkd looking in the magazine but yeah it has like 3 hdmi in and 2 out i think plus like 2nd zone a/v and 3rd zone audio i think

i wish i could afford it haha

Ahh would that be the STRDA5300ESS?? - $3k is quite an investment

I was surprised how much the ES line has come down in the last 5years. Recently saw an entry level ES (only 1 output) for a little over 1k. Recall these used to start at 3.5k!!

I resorted to a QS line receiver at the time, but would love full HDMI switching and 1080p upscaling - can only dream for now.

Hence HDMI direct to LCD (AppleTV gets the other HDMI) and optical to receiver (CD player gets coaxial audio)

Personally i'd go Onkyo or Pioneer. They make awesome receivers.

Hi all. Is there a thread anywhere that has the barebones details about the new MySky box? Like basic specs, facilities, pricing etc?

I'm just trying to figure out whether it's worth buying at this stage and information seems to be a little thin on the ground.

If you go back to page 22 you'll find a link to download the manual.

You pay $49.95 setup fee, plus either $599 up front or $15 per month (for a minimum of 12 months) for the MySky HDi box.
There's also the $10 per month 'HD ticket' - you need that to actually see anything in HD.

Thanks for those prompt responses folks. Most of my questions are answered now.

Just one thing: Looking on SKY's site, I see that they're quoting 49.23 as a base price with add-ons like movies for 19.76 (or something like that)

This comes to 68.99, which is what we're paying now for our old Pace decoder. So I guess that it's still possible for new subscribers to join SKY and have the basic vanilla setup, like ours.

I wonder if this situation will continue, or whether SKY will want all their subscribers to be using a MySky box eventually?

Personally, it's too rich for my blood. An extra 15.00 per month is too much just to get the double channel facility, but another 10.00 monthly for HD reception....? I don't think so :-)
