Seriously hey, I was sure it was a loophole. Retailers get a supplier rebate to help them achieve boxing day prices like that. The consumer cashback ended on Christmas eve. Most retailers didn't launch their boxing day prices til at least Christmas. Sounds like Jonathan copped the same deal with his 30 day price promise refund. Another loophole. So good.

I quizzed the guy I bought my TV from about the origins of these Boxing Day prices, as I said I assumed the price on the 1000 was being underwritten by Panasonic - he claims it wasn't, but resulted from competition between stores: one dropping their price, and the others following.

Interestingly, the data on PriceSpy does show some differences between stores as to when they dropped their prices to that low of $3398 - unsure if this supports his claim, reflects delays in PriceSpy's data, or simply shows when different retailers updated their websites or launched the offer...

I replaced a 55" Samsung LCD TV with a Sony 65" A8F 4K OLED from Noel Leeming mid-last year at a very good price - I think Sony's RRP was around $5000 at the time but I got the TV and a Sony 4k Ultra HD BD player together for $3200. The TV was a "run out model" before the new ones starting to come in (RRP about $7000 now, I think?).

It's a great TV and I highly recommend the Sony. In store I much preferred the Sony to an LG they had, but I don't remember comparing it to a Panasonic at the time. The Samsungs were QLED and more expensive, so I didn't even look at those. Picture quality is excellent whether watching blu-rays or streaming using the apps on the TV. Sound is adequate with no soundbar (although I usually use 5.1 channels through a receiver when watching movies).

My advice is: if you can't find a deal you want right now, don't rush it. You might have just missed the Boxing Day sales but you can be sure the next excuse for a price drop will be just around the corner.

I quizzed the guy at a store yesterday and he said that they were only able to go that low because of a rebate. The maths seems to add up based on the data lurking I've been doing on Pricespy price history - as in the cheapest I've seen them while the cashback has been running is $3800, then as soon as the ($400) cashback disappears they're selling them for $3400.

I cross referenced this against the 2018 price history of the GZ950, and previous cashback promotions that Panasonic have run and it seems to be a thing. $3400 seems to be absolute bottom dollar and only doable with with some kind of cashback or rebate. Which makes anyone who got a boxing day price and the cashback super lucky - I'm guessing Panasonic didn't expect any boxing day sales to begin before boxing day. JBhifi I know for one, only started their sale after all the stores had closed on Christmas Eve (although you could still buy online of course).

Interesting graph - I can't seem to see the same data - for me it says the earliest that $3398 price occurred was the 24th of Dec.

Appreciate the hope. So hard to be patient. But it'll be worth it. Panasonic Cashbacks seem to run twice a year. Pre Christmas and End of May - when they're trying to clear out old stock.

I'm just like, take my money Panasonic, I'll pay you right now if you can sell it to me for the same price you were happy to sell on Boxing Day.

Take a look at Jerryrigeverything YouTube review channel comparing OLED vs QLED. Its quite good, the space scene blew me away. (Picture would not even show up on QLED).

Folks have not mentioned burn-in on OLED tv's. Guess this would mainly be an issue if TV was used for gaming or watching news channels (CNN etc). Due to their static ticker & logo being on all day.

I would go OLED too, seems better choice overall & tech is improving.

My kids have bought a Switch off TM which arrived today; the youngest was keen to plug it into the new OLED that I installed last night, but I've said neither that nor the PS4 are going in the HT, but can remain in the house using the LCD... Given the cost, it's not worth the risk (especially given the kids won't be terribly good at managing this), but I think I'll try it once at least as I imagine it'll at least look amazing.

And, as for the TV - OMFG, I wish I'd gone OLED way earlier! Even though only a size upgrade from 60 to 65", there's now something so incredibly cinematic about the viewing experience.

I was in two minds about going Panasonic, given I've not been a fan of their interface,and that I like the Web OS on our LG (which my wife hates). And, yeah, it's improved somewhat and is fast, but some of the interface still works and looks exactly like it does on my seven-year-old plasma! "Functional" is probably the best way to describe it. Nice remote, though...

What shocked me (and I know it shouldn't have) is how bad the sound is... I mean it's beyond bad. I got the TV set up before hooking it up to the receiver, so first experience was with its own speakers. I seriously wonder how anyone can watch TV without external speakers - and especially contrasted with such a good picture. It also proved to me that a pleasurable viewing experience is SO affected by the quality of the sound. Once hooked up to the receiver it delivered the whole package...

That's part of the reason I went for the Sony A8G. It has Acoustic Surface Audio but even then that is only acceptable, much better that other TV speakers, but by no means amazing.

The other reason I went for Sony over LG and Pana was Sony's superior up-scaling. Given most content is still not in 4K this was important to me.

On the downside I found the Dolby Vision to be really dull, but I managed to adjust the brightness, contrast and colour temp so that Dolby Vision is visually comparable to HDR10.

On my OLED I have set the HDMI input that is used for gaming consoles set with a very low light setting compared to other inputs , still looks loads better than any of the LED TVs we have .
