Hooray, looks like I FINALLY got my BottleHead Crack Amp finished. I'll give it a week and install my speedball upgrade and then I shall be happy for 10 minutes.

Looks like a nice simple kit. Have you done the speedball upgrade? How well does it go?

Looks like a nice simple kit. Have you done the speedball upgrade? How well does it go?

I found it pretty simple to assemble, a nice kit to start back with after a 20+ year break from soldering. It has one little buzz which is haunting me, cold solder joint they suspect so when I get a few hours I'll try and fix it. I have the speedball upgrade sitting here ready for assembly
but want to give the crack some listening time vanilla so I can compare side by side.

I really rate it as an amp, with the ability to change it's sound by rolling tubes, not to mention a few other upgrades to capacitors etc to improve the sound further for next to no cash, it's a great kit. I really recommend it.

Hi guys.

As posted previously I bought these headphones

They arrived a couple of days ago Via Youshop, all good on that front.

However the sound quality is very very poor and I am unsure if it has to do with my Laptop or the headphones. I tried songs from ITunes, clips on Youtube etc.

When it is paired Via Bluetooth or Wired up..

- Majority (If not all) of the sound only comes out of the left headphone
- Very staticy
- Audio cuts out for a split second
- While skipping tracks/videos it takes a second or two to jump to that point. Eg skip from 40 seconds to 1 minute.

I am very close to my laptop, not even 1 metre away.

When I paired with my Phone (HTC One) it was better, however was still having those problems, however I didn't try it wired.

If there's low audio from the right channel, regardless of source or connection type, it'd unfortunately suggest they're faulty.

I forgot the mention on my earlier post that the manual says to charge the Headphones for 12 hours before use, I charged for 2-3 until the LED said it was "charged", could that of effected performance?

Also, I just tried it again. It seems crisper with my phone now, it sounds good. There was a bit of skipping but less than yesterday. I think the problem with my laptop and Headphones not working together is a problem with the laptop. I paired them up, went to ITunes to play a song, ITunes wouldn't play anything. Went to Youtube and the page crashed. I unpaired the laptop + Headphones, restarted Laptop and loaded up ITunes + Youtube, songs + clips were playing. Restarted again, paired and again nothing would play. Unpaired, restarted and played a song, then paired and it would play through the headphones although it was still quite choppy.

So it seems like my laptop has a problem with the headphones.

Could it be my laptop is using an older version of Bluetooth? Maybe I need to update some drivers?

Should I create a new thread about my problem rather than going off topic?

I've decided to get myself a better over the ear headset, mainly for use when playing my keyboard but also for use with my stereo system, laptop and very occasionally, travel. What ever I choose it needs to be able to work well with a low power, low output impedance amp.

I'd set myself a budget of $400 to $500 after initially having a lower limit ($300 - $400). I raised the limit to allow the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 to be considered.

I've had a pretty good read of this thread though not end to end, and it's sent me off to other places to look at reviews as well. Now it's down to picking from a few headsets, but then as you look around the shops looking at them, other models come to light.

Models I like the look of are:

KEF M500, look nice and good reviews, fold away nicely, however not keen on-the-on the ear as I prefer over-the-ear.

Blackbox M10, I have the C20's noise cancelling ear buds for travel which are very good and expect the M10's to be the same.

NAD Viso HP 50, looks a well designed unit with good looks and reviews.

Sony MDR-1R. Good looking and good reviews.

I went looking around today here in Hamilton, though only had time to check out HN and JB HiFi.

There were none of any of these at HN that I could find.

JBH had the Sony MDR-1R though I wasn't able to try them out. They also had the Sennheiser HD 380 pro which weren't on my list. Another one I hadn't considered but was able to try was the Bose Quiet Comfort 15. While I wasn't able to really checkout the audio comprehensively, the noise cancellation was certainly very impressive.

I'm not sure about the availability of the Blackbox M10s as they seem to be either out of stock or perhaps discontinued.

While the Bose sounded impressive with the noise cancellation I don't know that I need a noise cancelling headset for what I primarily need this headset for, and the need to have to change batteries. There's conflicting info as to whether they work without a charged battery.

At this stage the Sony MDR-1R and NAD Viso HP50 are probably my top two choices. They both appear to work well with a low power output and are in the right impedance range. One feature they both have is the detachable cord, which I like. The Sony MDR-1R has one slight edge in that I can buy them locally. It looks like I'll have to go for a trip out of town to check out the NAD Viso HP50. Having said that I have no problem buying sight unseen via the internet if I'm convinced that's what I need/want.

I'd appreciate any comments in comparing any of the headsets I've mentioned above. As well as the audio qualities, How well are they made? How comfortable are they? Any known design deficiencies? etc etc

Is there anything that I should be thinking about or looking at? Is the bluetooth version of the Sony worth it? I understand you can still operate them in the wired configuration. Could be handy for moving around the house.

I can put you in touch with the Blackbox people if you send me a PM. I strongly recommend those, they might not be as good as the Bose (which I find debatable) but the margin between them is single digit, they are cheaper and the service is second to none. I got a pair of them replaced under "warranty" about 3 years after the warranty expired. TWICE! Try that with Bose.

Is the goal noise cancelling, or sound quality? Not sure as your revised list has NC and non-NC cans? Since you already have noise cancelling for travel I'd fall on the side of going for sound quality, and easily recommend the HP50. The KEF M500 have a good reputation, and while they might not sound quite as good as the HP50, they can be had for $250 on Trademe (in other words you have to make a value for money decision).
