Senn hd 600 on shopbot.com.au research the suite before you buy but ive used accessoryjack and they are very helpful and

You can hear every mic adjustment every sigh ever seat adjustment every cymbal's n-th vibration heck if they undid a button on their collar I bet this can will reveal it. Very very accurate and detailed but not bright and not bassy

I must hear these A900s sometime, they sound like a good bit of gear (even if I'm more than a little sceptical about them possessing the "bass of the LCD-2s").

The HD600s recommended would probably be a reasonable choice, but if you're going to extend your budget up to their level then your options start to become fairly open - you could have the HE-400 at that price for example, or the AKG K550 or Q701, Shure SRH940 or 1440, or the Beyerdynamic DT 880.

EDIT: Just saw your comment about bass - the HE-400 has to rate highly if you're after detail and bass, the Sennheiser Momentums have a slightly bass-tilted sound signature also.

EDIT 2: Just in relation to your sources - which do you spend the most time listening from? Or, how does your listening break down between them? Some of these headphones will be more difficult to drive from a portable source than your stereo setup, may have an impact on the best recommendation.

I spent the vast majority of time listening via my PC which has an Asus Sonar Essence STX. Though presently I them connected to the headphone jack of the controller on the Logitech Z-5500 speakers. Not sure if I should plug them into the sound card directly. Next most frequently would be into the headphone jack of the Yamaha.

I'll have a look at the options and read some reviews. If anyone knows someone coming back from the USA before xmas I'd be keen to see if they would bring back something for me.

90% of the detail of the 650s, 90% of the bass of the LCD2s, give or take, on a good source/amp. PM me next time you'll be in Wellington, you're welcome to try em :) I keep them at work so I'd need a day or two warning to bring them home.

Those aren't the words I'd attribute to it. Think about it. You have a piece of foam that is covering the driver and reducing the frequency range that it naturally produces.

Generally, taking my hand off my mouth when talking has the exact opposite affect to 'muddy' and 'muffled'.

Its just ripping out a bit of foam. I did it to mine and it made a difference. Doesn't make them sound more muddy at all.

My sound card has an optical out, I have a DAC/amplifier, that's pretty good. Anything with a dac and amp would be great, inside a PC's pretty noisy. PC sound cards can be good, but the cheap ones and on board sound tends to have lots of interference, to my ear.

Yup well my Asus STX Should be good. I'd need to find something to sit between the Optical Out and my headphones I guess. Does the AMP just increase the volume?

Yes, an amp is just an amp. I just happen to have a DAC inside my amp. Headroom in the US have good amps and DACs, though I really see no point in an amp without a DAC. The ones for iPods are just silly unless you're trying to drive something like HD650s. I had one of their high end US$1800 amps for a few weeks, borrowed from a friend, it was nice but sounded exactly the same as my $500 DAC/Amp combination.

Does the Ipod Touch and say my PC and or Yamaha Reciever not have a DAC? Would that not be the same as amp + DAC? If you have a DAC at source and DAC at Amp level isn't that double sound processing which will likely colour the sound? Sorry for the dumb questions!
