ADKM: Thanks JWR. After I wrote my message I found a few via Google - at incredible prices considering they're $4.70 on Amazon - but they won't ship to NZ.

Is DVI-HDMI just a straight cable? I know DVI out to HDMI in is, but not sure about the other way around.

If it is I could use another monitor. But are any changes to raspberry's config.txt required ?

Usually, you use standard a HDMI-HDMI cable and purchase the HDMI-DVI adapter. It's a simple and small adapter e.g. http://www.wavetech.co.nz/HDMI-DVI-1.html

I guess you could also buy a HDMI-DVI cable instead.

If you use an HDMI-DVI adapter, then you don't need to change anything in the Raspberry PI setup. It just worked for me.

The two shops are right next to each other here in Christchurch. Wavetech sell the Raspberry PI and accessories. Darkstar sell a lot of network type stuff.

Thanks JWR... I went right through the ordering process for one at DarkStar then bailed! At the end they want $6 to send it from Chch To Dn. Bastards! It'd fit in a wee padded envelope for a quarter that!

Actually, I have found them a very good company to deal with.

I guess they get hit with minimum freight charges.

Courier charges are pretty expensive in NZ compared to somewhere like the US.

Yes ... and some sites offer free delivery - even international ! DS offered no alternative shipping method - it was Courier or nothing. Can't the office girl take a trip to the Post Office once a week !! ?

As far as I can tell, there is only Darrin there.

I think his main aim is to sell networking products in the sort of quantities small business and home users would buy.

I have bought quite a bit of stuff there. I am very happy about the price and quality:)

Courier charges aren't expensive here at all its just what people want to charge, have a look at some of the Trademe courier chargers.

$6 to me isn't a lot as long as its consistent, if the item were valued over $100 but small would it be excessive?

Mi pi just arrived today! So I'll be re-reading all the advice here and studying the setup procedures again.

I have both a HDMi-DVI adapter and HDMi-SVGA coming. Before I can power it up, I need to identify the + and - leads on the power connector.
I can hopefully find it on Google but it anyone here knows? Thanks. It's a micro-USB to TypeA lead I chopped the typeA end of.

Are they coloured, usually +ve is Red, -ve is black. Pretty sure even USB conforms to this.

Yes - pretty obvious! Thanks. I confirmed pinouts via Google and have succesfully ran all the setup programs, boot loaders and all sorts!
Now presented with a screen of blue bubbles.. and a menu - Weather, Pictures, Videos etc... back to Google and see what's next!

Hi, I've manged to get up some files on rsapberry and see them !! It's looking VERY promising although no sound yet. Does that cone via HDMi or the 3.5mm jack ?

One thing is a minor hassle - the mouse(corded Mircosoft wheel mouse) is very sluggish... sort of slow and lags.

Would anyone know how to improve that ?

It can output sound via hdmi or analogue.

Not sure that sound is sent via hdmi if you use dvi converters though (could be wrong)

If plex client there is a settings option for hdmi or analogue so there will be similar option with xbmc.

If using raspian operating system , the is a setup utility which has option for hdmi or analogue.

Wikipedia confirms that audio not transmitted over DVI connectors to / from hdmi so you will need to use the analogue 3.5mm socket.

I used rasplex and there was an option under settings for audio hdmi or analogue.

I would recommend getting a very good fast USB3.0 stick and installing Raspbmc in USB mode. This made mine a lot smoother and less prone to SD card corruptions.

This really is no longer necessary. Since I think the November update last year RaspBMC will run as quick on a class 10 SD card now as it would from a USB3.0 stick. SD card corruptions are now rare (especially with overclocking) since it has also been addressed in an update a few months back.

Hi Farcus,

Really happy with things so far ! The mouse is the only thing to improve - it is very sluggish while watching something. I hope this will work better as a remote (too late if not as I bought one!)

When I get (far) more familiar with it I'd like to try watching BBC World. Did install the 'Wold News Live' plugin but but am told "Script failed".

Thanks for your encouragement to get a pi. Already proved it will show files DLNA would not.
