Although it's at $63 (excl. GST), at an exchange rate of 0.80 that makes it about US$50, 42% more expensive than what the Raspberry Pi foundation has been pitching at.
At least Element14 is playing ball with the whole affordability thing.

Availability is also undetermined at this stage of course.

RS now have it at $48 also.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Could the $ difference be something to do with Uk -> USA dollar, tax or shipping costs.

I expect their systems have default values to add margins, account for exchange rates, shipping etc. that led to RS initially to have it at $63.
I would further speculate that the Raspberry Pi foundation have contracts with RS and Farnell to say they won't sell them at higher than the local currecny equivalent of US$25 and US$35 for the model A and B respectively, which is the price the foundation have stated they would be sold at all along. (They can't control sales taxes of course).
After all, they are a charitable organisation who developed this device to encourage development in schools, at an affordable price, initially in the UK but also in less developed countries. (Hence the inclusion of an RCA output for video, so that those without LCD TVs/monitors can also use them.)
It just so happens that the hobbyists and entrepeneurs have shown a great interest in the Pi and the demand is far exceeding what they initially expected so they have gone to a couple of the big guys to help manufacture and sell the units.

I could be completely wrong of course.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

reven: my setup will be:
- raspberry pi strapped to back of tv
- powered from usb from my tv (hopefully this works, have 2 usb ports on my tv)
- hdmi cec adapter from pulse eight (or MCE ir usb receiver if i get sick of the limit keys support of the cec)
- ethernet networked
- running xbmc pvr with tvheadend
that should playback my 1080ps, hulu, free cable, and watch live tv from tvheadend.

xbmc has airplay support so i believe you can play something from your laptop/phone/pad and have it played from xbmc. never tried this though.

the only sad thing is no netflix support, ill still need my ps3 for that. hopefully when netflix comes out with a linux client (they announced they are working on one, but its low priority) xbmc can be made to work with that.

how are people planning on housing their units? my best solution so far is a couple of lego boards and put it between those (got that idea from a sample lego case design on raspberrypi), not sure if its a good idea to strap the raw board directly to tv.

this is a pretty exciting year for tech, with these cheap style of computers coming out, and the padfone style phones/tablets/laptops. in a few months i suspect ill only have 1 full blown computer anymore and that will be my server. (currently have 2 mac minis, windows desktop pc, ipad, iphone, macbook pro, and ubuntu server)

Yep I have similar plans. Don't need the pulse eight adaptor because the Rasp Pi has built in CEC support. I'll probably use an ice cream container until the official case comes out.

you sure it has builtin CEC support? where you see that?

on a side note, these are going to be fun to take along when you're buying a new tv. You can shove a 1080p vid on it, test out the remote via CEC, test it can power it via USB, etc.

Seems like a better idea to buy any future boards from RS from now on as they are charging 31 pounds which is roughly $60.

If I buy from element 14 at todays price and have it charged to my cc, that agreement is between myself and element14, not myself and raspberrypi, so, I don't see any way they can enforce that. Especially as most people (including myself) were not aware of that.

They may charge element 14 more for it, element 14 may cancel the sale or may not, but, I should not be charged more.

It would be worth attempting to buy it at that price today if you were inclined (despite the very long wait for one). Worse case, your order does not get fulfilled.

Your cc won't be charged today, mine still hasn't been charged and i bought the first day they were out.
It won't be charged until it ships.

I'm not trying to defend element14 charging more than they have stated, i honestly couldn't care less. I was just trying to warn you that even though that price is listed you may be in for a surprise.

Personally i would buy from RS and save myself a whole lot of hassle.

This is becoming a bit of a farce, when all this time they have been pitching them at US$25/$35. Still pretty good value for what it is I guess but still.

Maybe they need to update the banner on the website as well : An ARM/GNU Linux box for $25....but only if you live in the right place.

I guess RS price is much fairer, it is 21 pounds which is pretty fair when converted from 35 usd.

Then 5 pounds postage anywhere in the world which for us in NZ is a pretty decent deal.

Then they have 5 pound VAT but it does say we won't have to pay that if we are out of Europe. We might have to pay GST though.

To me paying between NZ$50 - 60 is a pretty decent deal.

honestly i would be willing to pay the same amount for a raspberrypi as apple tv, well once it has a case.

for $75ish its still a bargin in my opinion.

So I rung Element14 today just to check if they were any the wiser as to when the Pi's might ship. They're now talking October. Although they are due to get some in July for those who ordered early, but she couldn't tell me whether my order is one of those.

This thing will be an antique before I receive it.
