THE ABYSS (1989) Ultimate Collector's Edition - US IMPORT

Release Date Australia: TBA • Release Date NZ: May 22.

When the ballistic missile submarine USS Montana goes down on the edge of the Cayman Trough after encountering an unusual underwater object, the US Navy recruits the crew of the privately-owned Deepcore underwater drilling platform—led by Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) and his estranged wife Dr. Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio)—to effect a rescue. Along for the ride, and technically in command of the mission, is a SEAL team led by Lieutenant Coffey (Michael Biehn). Upon reaching the wreck site, the crew soon discovers that there’s no one left to rescue. But unknown to Deepcore’s crew, the SEALs plan to scuttle the wreck with one of the sub’s own MIRV warheads to prevent the rest of its nukes from falling into Russian hands.

Well, the Dune: Part Two SteelBook Edition for Australia isn't the one I was expecting, which is the one being released in the US, Germany and the UK (HMV Exclusive). We are getting the alternate artwork being released in France and Finland. There is also a third variation for Italy which is the same artwork as our 2-Film Collection release.

I blindly Pre-ordered the SteelBook from JBAU expecting the same artwork as the US. I'm a little disappointed, but I would be happy with any of the three options.

The True Lies and The Abyss 4K Ultra HD imports will likely not be available in any great number, so, if anyone wants one, Pre-order now.

Thanks for the extensive info, Movieman.

It's good to see JBNZ getting these Disney titles eventually. It's just a shame they're so late compared to places in the US. I've had my copies of The Abyss, Aliens, and True Lies for weeks now.

I received my copy of Andor and season two of The Mandalorian yesterday (less than a week delivery time, and both unscathed in a wee box), and I'm excited to rewatch Andor this weekend. Meanwhile my steelbook of The Crow was dispatched today and I hope to have it by next Monday.

Also, do any of you guys use the digital codes that come with US movies? I usually give mine away online, but if any of you would want them I'd be glad to give them to a fellow NZ collector.

Just noticed on the JBNZ website that the shipping prices have gone up to $4.99 per item from $1.50. I usually order more than one title when I buy from JBNZ, so, in future, I'll pickup from one of the Christchurch stores.

Funny enough I actually prefer the design we're getting opposed to the US variant

Have you had a chance to watch the new Abyss, Aliens and True Lies releases? Deciding if they are worth the price of imports given what I've read about the AI-ness of the transfers

Please let us know how the Andor rewatch went! It's probably my favourite Star Wars show in years and might put in an order.

It depends whether you have a problem with AI. Personally I prefer the smoother look of digital as opposed to grain. I bought True Lies and The Abyss from iTunes and I thought they looked great, not perfect, but great. The Abyss especially. I also got a free DV/DA upgrade for Titanic, which I already bought in HD. I thought that Titanic was stunning.

I think that the majority of movie lovers are very happy with these new transfers. It's the die-hard grain lovers who are complaining.

Again, if you prefer grain, then you may be disappointed with these transfers. I think of them as the 2023 versions.

I'll definitely be ordering the Abyss from JB, as long as they offer a delivery option, as it is currently click and collect only (the only preorder like that).  I may be able to get one instore during King's Birthday Weekend, as I'll be visiting a city with a JB store.  It looks like  the delivery price is going to be charged differently now, as I put two movies into the cart and they charged $5.99 for the total postage.

I've only watched True Lies (and Titanic) so far. It's pretty much what Movieman said, the picture quality is fantastic.

Will do! It really is astonishing how good the show is, right? I had though that the first season of The Mandalorian couldn't be beaten in its excellence for a SW show, but then came along Andor to blow it out of the water. Though I shouldn't be surprised considering how Rogue One is the best Star Wars movie outside of the original trilogy.

Now this has got me thinking at how I'd kill for a 4K Blu-ray release of The Foundation...

For what it’s worth, both Waterworld and Last House On the Left have been added to the 4k Arrow selection at Jb Hi-Fi in Palmerston North. Both are booklet edition, about $75. There’s also a booklet blu ray of Tremors 2.
None appeal to me, but hoping for the day Carrie, Witness or Wolf of Wall St appear on the shelves.
