however when I purchased the HD598's recently to "try" with my GX1000 Gaming and Surround DAC (both of which are freaking amazing in case anyone cares)

I had the HD599's + AMP/DAC combo at my PC and they were amazing when home alone but the amount of ambient noise they let in was just to much for me so I ended having to downgrade to a pair of closed back headphones to make the little game time I get more enjoyable

Which reminds me.. I must sell those headphones!

Unfortunately I'm flying overseas mid Sept, and no public holidays before then.

I would walk into a store, and be up front. Say you have a "friend" who purchased them for $350 over a public holiday weekend, and you are heading away and that friend keeps saying how good they are, would they consider doing a deal on them for you...

Nothing to lose other than 15 minutes of your life. If you get them inside of $400 consider yourself a good deal.

I can close the door in my room, so it doesn't worry me. The GX1000 Surround processor is the best money I've spent in gaming for YEARS.

Excellent advice. I'm now the proud owner of some Sony WH-1000XM2's for $390. :D

Good work! Glad it worked out for you. Let us know how you like them. Some people will tell you burning them in is Rubbish, but as someone who experienced it first hand on many occasions, I'd suggest letting them play music for a few (8) before listening to them, is well worth while.

Any particular music? Or just a random playlist? It can't hurt regardless!
The guy who upgraded my speakers in the car strongly recommended it.

Burning in definitely does make a difference. Heck, if changing the type of support under a CD player can change the way it sounds (it can) then certainly actually using the stuff will have an effect, especially so with speakers and headphones that actually have moving parts.

Of course, it depends how critical your listening is and what you habitually listen to, I think - if you like the kind of thing that is essentially a wall of sound, you probably won't notice subtle improvements in timbre and accuracy, spatial settling and so on. If you listen to things that have more quiet passages, etc. then you will. A couple of good tracks for headphones for me to use as comparables are "Twin Rocks, Oregon" by Shawn Mullins and "Perfect Love" by Marc Cohn. Both have the ability to sound exciting or meh depending on the cans. With the right gear, you will think they are performing in your front room.

I also have several albums recorded using binaural mics. Those are a real treat if you like to listen through headphones. There is nothing quite like it but it only works for music that is recorded in a live studio or venue rather than laid down as seperate tracks.

I found the PX's at $100 cheaper than Noels at an independent in their sale, so just said "Will you match their price?" and they just said "Sure, no problem".

Delphinus:

I'm also looking for something with the following:

  1. Noise cancelling for a trip to Europe
  2. Comfortable to wear with glasses
  3. Bluetooth with mic so I can use them for handsfree calls.
  4. Carry box would be handy so I can keep them safe while travelling
  5. I'm not an audiofile, so decent sound is fine, it doesn't have to be utterly perfect.

I have a few airpoints to use up, so see these are an option from the airpoints store:

Braven Noise Cancelling Signature Headphones: $370

JBL E65 Bluetooth Headphones: $310

But also open to just paying cash if something much better is an option.

I am looking for something "similar" for the same reasons - Noise Cancelling for a trip to Europe.
I do not have glasses and outside of the noise cancelling features, will be connected to a mobile device to watch YouTube or Netflix ..

I've read some reviews around the place on the Sony WH-100MX2, Bose QCII and also Plantronics BackBeat Series Pro 2
I currently use Plantronics 505's at home for listing to YouTube/Netflix on a mobile device and have no complaints.

This is my first time looking at any headphones with noise cancelling and so am a bit out of my depth

I have to say I'm loving these headphones. Amazing noise cancelling, great music. Very very comfortable.
Only downside is the reasonably average mic. If I'm using them to make a phone call over BT person on the other end often has trouble hearing me clearly.

It feels "wrong" for me to spend $500-600 on premium headphones I will only use a couple of times a year (at this stage .. after I purchase I may never want to go back to regular headphones ever again), which is why the $300 Plantronics ones feel better .. let's say the budget is $500 ..

Anyone seen any deals on the Sony WH-1000XM2 in recent weeks/months?

Cheapest I can get them for is $500, using my flybuys points to cover the rest of the purchase price ($600 at Noels)

I see Delphinus got them for $390 by mentioning a "long weekend special" - did you choose any store that sold them, or a specific store?
I do have Labour Weekend in between now and travel date
