May I ask - is there any way to get the output from it streaming over DLNA? Probably not (solution would be to get a 2nd one) but so it could be fed into a second room ?

seems this will be available in Gotham / XBMC 13 once it is released in the next month or so.

farcus: you need to make a corner arrow in the top left and bottom right of the screen, and then a perfect square in the centre of the screen. If you keep an eye on the numbers when making the arrows you shouldn't need to adjust anything with the square.

Hi Farcus, how do you 'make a corner arrow' ? Apart from clicking (which seems to have no effect) I can't figure that.. I can resize the square and move the subtitle bar position but am missing any way to set or exit that screen.

Thanks for tip about mpeg licence. I now have it!! Arrived by email about 10 mins ago. Just about to instal. I have Putty Set up.

Great news you may soon be able to stream to other devices! Seems nothing is impossible. :)

to exit the calibration screen just use the escape key or back key on your remote.

It's amazing how simple it is when you know! All systems go and we're just about to view something !

no problem - happy to help.

One more tip - if you are in the habit of shutting down your pi it could be an idea to turn off automatic updates from raspbmc because the updates occur when you boot and you get no warning - so youu could be sitting down to watch some telly and an update begins that will lock you out of the pi for 20 mins or so.
I usually just check the raspbmc website for updates from time to time to avoid the hassle of the automatic update.

Good idea Farcus, will follow suit. After the 1st 'proper' viewing it's clear mastering the FF/RW and pause controls need a bit of practice.
Our viewing was spoiled slightly by not having full screen video. No doubt it's possible, with all the options available but not explored yet.
The time display was full screen top right so raspberry knows the screen size !
We used Aspect zoom1 on the Panasonic, but that caused pi's OSD to go off screen. Once a 'Fullscreen" with upwards pointing arrow appeared
but never again to see what it did !
Also got (once) the video in the background with the menu showing. LOL novice user beware!
Overall it was pretty darn good though, and Jill & I look forward to sorting out what we don't know yet!

The PI will always respect the resolution of the original video file. If the PI OSD fills the screen but the actual movie doesn't then that is caused by the movie aspect ratio. You would strike the same thing on any (decent) home theatre system.
Most movies, because of their original aspect ratio tend to have black bars at top and bottom - while most HD tv shows will fill the entire screen.

The remote arrived but it's an absolute dog. Hardly ever does the same thing twice or work in any consistent or reliable manner. Suspect it'll go into the recycling bin very soon !

But oddly, it would do nothing with the pi connected to the Panasonic Plasma TV, while it did at least respond when pi connected to a computer monitor. Any reason for that do you know ?

It came with no instructions of any kind. Will any "PC Remote" work? If so, I'll hunt around for something better.

There are better - but these are pretty good for the money - especially for ease of use during playback (pause, stop etc) and for turning the unit off.
In addition, they have a built in mouse function which can come in handy for controlling some functions of the pi.

Hi Farcus,

Do you think that remote would be better than the Panasonic one ? It's that ease of playback, rewind etc. that seems the trickiest but that may improve
with a bit more practice. The problem is the screen size. I've never quite figured out why anyone would buy a large widescreen TV and be happy to watch a
picture that only fills half of it.
The aspect control on the TV will correct this (even if it makes everyone a bit taller and thinner !) but when you go to pause or fast forward, the OSD is then off screen
and you have to restore this, navigate to desired place then reapply the aspect. That's the problem and I hope there's a solution.
I did ask on an XBMC forum but no significant replies.

yeah - that remote has dedicated play / payse / stop / FF / rewind buttons etc so you don't need to use the OSD

also, with the directional pad at the bottom (not the mouse wheel at top) forward & back buttons skip forward or back 10 seconds and up / down buttons skip forward and back by 10 mins

Not all the buttons on the remote are relevant - mostly just the mouse function at the top, play / pause etc near the top and the directional, select, escape, back buttons near the bottom

like I said earlier - raspbmc will respect the original aspect ratio.
However, you can override this.
During plaback use the remote mouse to bring up the OSD and click on the moviereel icon.
There is then an option to select view mode
I guess to get rid of the black bars in movies the best selection here would be stretch 16:9 (but you can play with the options and select which you prefer)

Fine on preserving the original spect and black bars - if that's what someone wants but even better
you're not stuck with it if you don't want it. I remember hiring the DVD of 'Best little XXXhouse in Texas'
the picture was so small we had to give up watching it.

We have resorted to the Panasonic TV remote which is really good, but can only use it in conjunction with the OSD. It operates with the CEC (?) protocol.

From reading around I wonder if I need to set the input device to something other than defaut and/or manually edit the keypad file? Actually in order to do this I got "Linux For Dummies' from the library and set up Ubuntu on a old computer (but it was too slow to run it!).. Then I discovered Windows gives me access via the LAN, so I can possibly use Notepad for any editing. (I've also got Putty up and running).

Getting a remote functioning with all the clever stuff would be good. If you have any pointers, be glad to hear and have a play.

Still very pleased with results all round, everything streams just fine. Did buy the mpeg licence for £2 UK. Haven't figured out how to browse the Net or watch Youtube yet, but no trouble with the addon for BBC etc.

sorry - I probably can't be of much help.
I just plugged mine in and it worked.
I guess things I'd recommend are - plug the IR receiver directly into one of the usb ports on the raspi rather than a hub.
Check that the remote actually works. Do you have anything else you can test it with?
Have you updated to gotham yet? You could try that and see if it makes any difference (but beware there are some small issues you are gonna come across that will need some attention as there are a couple of present bugs in Gotham on raspbmc - but completely addressable with a couple of setting changes.)
in "settings > input devices" ensure you have "remote control sends keyboard presses" & "enable mouse and touch screen support" checked.
Failing that - try asking over at the raspbmc forums.

edit: or if you have a smartphone just download the xbmc remote app.
