Anyone seen any deals on the Sony WH-1000XM2 in recent weeks/months?

Cheapest I can get them for is $500, using my flybuys points to cover the rest of the purchase price ($600 at Noels)

I see Delphinus got them for $390 by mentioning a "long weekend special" - did you choose any store that sold them, or a specific store?
I do have Labour Weekend in between now and travel date

Go and have a conversation in person to your local store. Tell them you are looking for a deal on them, you have a friend who purchased them 2 weeks ago for $390 because he had referenced the good deal available over the long weekend.

They will very likely do you the same deal.

Don't be scared, nothing to lose.

I've seen the Beyerdynamic DT770's going up and down, always did want to get the 250ohm's closed back. I don't know if there are better models since they've been around for a while now.

I had an old flyer in my email advertising them for $350, so I showed the salesperson that (random noelleeming store) and he looked up the code and offered them for $390 no questions asked so I took it.

Here's a screenshot if it helps.

Pricespy shows $433 at Ascent. Noel should match this?

I actually asked Ascent; 6-8 weeks lead time

I'll check with Noels in person to see if I can get a better deal

Noels won't know about the Ascent lead time - if you just show them the relevant Ascent web page for pricing, that should be sufficient.

Except the webpage says out of stock; you can add it to your cart though (which is why I asked if they could actually get them)

I'm pretty sure the NL Price Promise requires the item to be in stock

I'm looking for a pair of open backed headphones for home use.

At the moment my short list is Beyerdynamic DT880 or Sennheiser HD600.

NZ pricing is a bit odd compared to overseas pricing. In the US those two are about the same, and here as much as $350 apart!

Does anyone have either? Or suggestions for alternatives?

Music genres are mainly jazz and smooth jazz, Singer/songwriter (eg Shawn Mullins, Marc Cohn) with soft rock from time to time (such as Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac, America and so on) and sometimes chillout electronica but not often.

I would buy the HD650's personally. I prefer their warmer signature. If you have a tube amp, they do sound wonderful.

You don't mention if requirement of amplification is a problem or not, the HD650's do benefit reasonably from it.

I'll be (initially) driving them from the ESS Sabre Quad DAC and amp in an LG phone. That will cope up to a max of 600 Ohms.

The 650/600 debate rages all over the internet; what I do see is the 650 pricing being well out of step with the 650 pricing in NZ though, as well as being much higher than overseas (the Massdrop HD6XX which is a custome 650 is US$199 v the NZ retail price of normal 650's which is NZ$799!)

Have you compared the two personally?

I have a pair of the HD650's first gen, which I will likely sell in the coming few months after I get some time to decide which of my MANY headphones I am keeping vs selling.

I listened to the HD600's but I preferred the HD650's because I like my music warm. It was a long time ago so I couldn't even tell you what I didn't like about the 600's. The 650's are considered to punch well above their weight.

I have heard good things about the Massdrop HD6xx.

I also have a pair of T1's which I really love. I think I'll either go with the HD650's and the HD800S as my final two pairs, or the T1 and HD800S.

I'd like to try the T1's - they seem awesome on paper. Pricey though.

I like Beyer's designs, but all the reviews suggest that the 880, whilst very good, tends towards the brighter end and I think I would find that a bit tiresome for a long listening session.

I'm currently using B&W PX headphones, which are very good once broken in a bit, but I'd like something a bit more relaxed, laid back etc.
