Kevin Costner's epic film franchise Horizon: An American Saga has already been relegated to Amazon Prime's streaming service after Chapter 1 bombed at the worldwide box-office. The film will still be available to watch in theatres in the US. New Zealand's theatrical release is tomorrow (July 18th).

Costing around US$100 Million to produce, and including a large sum of Costner's own money the box-office return is a major blow to what is planned as a four chapter franchise. The second chapter was to follow hot on the heels of Chapter 1 with an August release, but it has now been postponed to an as yet, unknown, future date.

New Line Cinema, a branch of Warner Bros are hoping that streaming of the first film will give audiences more time to grow into the franchise. A theatrical release is still planned for Chapter 2, and, at this time, Costner is said to be going ahead with filming of Chapters 3 & 4 later this year.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One also under performed at the box-office and it seems that movie goers prefer to see a movie which is going to have an ending after three hours (the running time of Horizon - Chapter 1).

Whatever the reason, I'm hoping that the franchise can come back from it's disastrous theatrical returns, but, as Westerns are not the guaranteed success that they once were; I think Costner's goose is well and truly cooked.

August 21st:

I think that maybe the artwork has been used from the previous releases and the Blu-ray will not be included. I'll post an update when I can get confirmation.

The prices would indicate that there will be a Blu-ray included. We shall see.

I have been informed that DVD Land are notorious for listing titles that haven't been announced, and they disappear from the website when it becomes obvious that they are not happening.

Pity 😒

Whilst on the subject of Disney/Fox titles; I just realised that Deadpool & Wolverine won't be released over here either. Another expensive import.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment US has announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray; Colombia Classics Collection: Volume 5 on October 01st in the US.

The six films in the COLUMBIA CLASSICS 4K ULTRA HD COLLECTION VOLUME 5 are only available on 4K Ultra HD disc within this special limited edition collector's set. Included with the collection is a gorgeous hardbound 80-page book, featuring in-depth sections about the making of each film within the set via six all-new incisive essays from renowned writers and journalists, plus rare photos from deep within the Columbia Pictures archives. The set also includes hours of special features across the films, including memorable glimpses behind the scenes, in-depth feature commentaries, an all-new discussion featuring filmmaker Greta Gerwig and star Saoirse Ronan reflecting on LITTLE WOMEN, and much more! Plus, as part of the Columbia 100th celebration, the set includes an exclusive bonus disc highlighting four rare Columbia films from the 1920s, with several presented in full 4K resolution!

Each film is presented in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision High Dynamic Range, and five of the films include immersive Dolby Atmos mixes.

ALL THE KING'S MEN (1949)

In a bravura performance, Broderick Crawford won the 1949 Academy Award® for Best Actor with his stunning portrayal of bull-headed, backwoods lawyer Willie Stark, in this powerful drama about political and personal corruption. A somber but realistic chronicle of raw, brutal power in force, All The King's Men is based on Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name and won Best Picture of 1949. Celebrating its 75th anniversary.

ON THE WATERFRONT (1954)

Marlon Brando gives one of the screen's most electrifying performances in his Oscar®-winning role as Terry Malloy in On the Waterfront (Best Picture, 1954). Ex-fighter Malloy (Brando) could have been a contender but now toils for boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) on the gang-ridden waterfront. Terry is guilt-stricken, however, when he lures a rebellious worker to his death. But it takes the love of Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), the dead man's sister, to show Terry how low he has fallen. When his crooked brother Charley the Gent (Rod Steiger) is brutally murdered for refusing to kill him, Terry battles to crush Friendly's underworld empire. Directed by Elia Kazan (A Streetcar Named Desire) and written by Budd Schulberg (What Makes Sammy Run?), this unforgettable drama about Terry's redemption is among the most acclaimed of all films. Celebrating its 70th anniversary.

A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS (1966)

Winner of six 1966 Academy Awards® including Best Actor, Best Director and Best Picture! Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield), England's Roman Catholic Chancellor, is forced into a difficult position when corrupt King Henry VIII (Robert Shaw) demands his approval to divorce his wife and marry his mistress. Torn between his conscience and duty to the crown, Sir Thomas chooses to say nothing, sparking the rage of the king. What unfolds is a battle of wills packed with palace intrigue, political brinksmanship and the fate of man, church and country. In the end, his silence spoke loudest of all.

TOOTSIE (1982)

Michael Dorsey is a talented actor, but his demanding nature and stubborn temperament have antagonized every producer in New York. Now his agent insists no one will hire him. But Michael needs money - eight thousand dollars to be exact - and to earn it, he's willing to play the role of a lifetime. Dustin Hoffman stars with Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray and Geena Davis in director Sydney Pollack's heart-filled classic that heralded a new era of Hollywood wig-flipping and set a new standard for unpredictable laugh-out-loud comedy.

THE AGE OF INNOCENCE (1993)

Martin Scorsese, one of the great directors of our time, directs Oscar®-winner Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder in a brilliant adaptation of Edith Wharton's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. A ravishing romance about three affluent New Yorkers caught in a tragic love triangle, the ironically-titled story chronicles the grandeur and hypocrisy of high society in the 1870s. At the center of the film is Newland Archer (Day-Lewis), an upstanding attorney who secretly longs for a more passionate life. Engaged to the lovely but ordinary socialite May Welland (Ryder), Newland resigns himself to a life of quiet complacency. But when May's unconventional cousin returns to New York amid social and sexual scandal, Newland risks everything for a chance at true love. The Age of Innocence is a spellbinding portrait of hidden romance and regret.

LITTLE WOMEN (2019)

Writer-director Greta Gerwig has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author's alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig's take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on their own terms – is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Welcome to the Weekly 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & SteelBook Release Schedule for Friday July 19th.

Titanic (UK Import) has released today at JBNZ and surprisingly The Conversation and Election have been brought forward by three weeks from their original release date. JBAU still have them at the Pre-order stage with the original release date of August 7th.

If dates don't get changed, we have to wait until July 31st for our next new releases on both sides of the Tasman.

I don't really know why Sony are re-issuing so many titles; some of them were originally issued quite recently. JBNZ are advertising them as having both a 4K and Blu-ray disc, but EzyDVD have them as 4K only, which I suspect is correct.

Taxi Driver SteelBook has been pushed back to September 4th in Australia and New Zealand.

HMV UK boss says Physical Media is making a comeback due to "growing frustrations" with streaming services!

HMV has reported that DVD and Blu-ray sales are on the rise, despite a decline in previous years due to the popularity of streaming services like Disney Plus, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. ITV reports that the managing director of HMV, Phil Halliday, has made promising statements regarding the business, with the "physical visual" side being a particular highlight.

Halliday attributes collectors as a key demographic for increased Blu-ray sales, alongside growing frustrations with streaming services such as rising subscription prices and confusion as to what content is available on certain streaming platforms. This has reportedly driven people back to buying physical discs to avoid these streaming pitfalls.

"It’s been really positive to see the physical products in visual back in growth – 4K and Blu-ray have been doing particularly well," says Halliday. He went on to say "It’s a bit like people buying music physically, in that we are getting a lot of people wanting to collect certain titles. Releases have picked up as well, and we have some really good titles like Challengers coming out at the moment people are willing to pay for a physical copy of shows or films they know they will rewatch."

Seeing 4K Blu-ray doing well is especially important, especially as just a year ago there were fears that the format might be dying out. Collector's always prefer the superior picture and sound quality that 4K Blu-ray provides over streaming, and the security of always having their favourite content on hand without worrying about licenses expiring or subscription prices rising.

Good news!

Apparently some of last years 4K release of Rocky 1-4 had audio problems and Roadshow replaced faulty discs to collector's who applied for replacements.

Reports say that this years Rocky: Ultimate Knockout Collection has no such problems, so you can buy with confidence 😀
