Hi everyone -

I'm having some pretty frustrating problems getting EPG Collector (V4.0 Fixpak 1) to work properly with my new Windows 8 / Freeview HTPC setup. It's a fresh system - there's nothing of note installed on it other than WMC 8, the EPG Collector and the drivers for my TBS6280 DVB-T/T2 card.

Unfortunately the problems I'm having seem similar to the ones described in the locked "EPG Collector not uploading to Windows Media Center 7 after retune" thread from a few months ago, which seemed to end without a firm resolution.

I've uploaded the contents of the INI file and most recent log here: http://pastebin.com/43s02miy

Essentially, according to EPG Collector's logs, the data appears to be fetched and imported into WMC successfully; but then the EPG data doesn't appear, partially appears (for some channels - currently only TV3 PLUS1, PRIME, ChoiceTV, The Shopping Channel, Parliament TV and Radio NZ National) or completely appears but then disappears again at some point in the following few hours. I've seen the issue where programmes have '.' titles as described in the previous thread too, but that only happened once. I've tried disabling inband listings in WMC, but this didn't make any difference.

I'm now at a loss as to how either to solve the problem or further trace where it's going wrong.

If anyone can help, Milky Bars are on me!

What registry setting did you use to disable the inband listings?

I didn't change anything in the registry - I just went to Edit Channel -> Edit Listings -> Disable Inband for each channel. Am I right in thinking that you shouldn't really need to disable inband listings for the EPG Collector to work anyway?

Yes you do need to stop WMC loading the guide because it overwrites the MHEG5 data collected by EPG Collector with EIT data contained in the broadcast.

However the EIT is not complete and after the first few hours the program descriptions just contain a dot.

The registry key is DisableInBandSchedule. Heres a thread about it.

Remember to reboot after setting it. I'm not sure disabling each channel individually has the desired effect.

Sorry that link didn't give you the all the info. This is what I meant to say

To disable the in-band guide try the following registry setting

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\GLID

DisableInbandSchedule DWORD to 1.

If it doesn't exist (GLID branch or DisableInbandSchedule) create it.

Thanks for the info Steve!

Added the registry entry, restarted, cleared the existing channel data, restarted again and then re-added all the channels.

I ran EPG Collector, and it appeared to collect all the data successfully again (http://pastebin.com/1Zz8JkjG), and the programmes seemed all present and correct in WMC, except for TV2 and TV3 which mysteriously had no data at all.

But now, about half an hour later, all the EPG data has vanished again - every channel is showing "No data available"!

Blimey! Any ideas what's going on?

There is another registry setting that may be needed (according to info on the Net).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MediaCenter\Service\BackgroundScanner

Set "PeriodicScanEnabled" DWORD to 0. If the key doesn't exist create it.

Remember to reboot after updating the registry. Also check your other key is correct. If you want absolute confirmation they are correct post a screenshot.

This is a very irritating problem that only seems to affect some users. It only occurs for NZ terrestrial and for the users who have found it a particular problem the fix seems to be hard to pin down.

I'd also consider deleting your MC database (and the related backup directory) and starting again if it's not too much trouble. Do that after any registry changes.

The problem might just be solved - all the listings have been present and correct for over twelve hours now. In the end I didn't use the PeriodicScanEnabled setting.

Anyway, I don't want to leave potentially faulty information on the Internet, so I'll give it a few days to see what happens, and reset everything and delete the database to recreate the problem and solution again, and then report back with details about what I did.

OK, my Windows Media Center guide has been rock solid for the past few days now. I've also had a chance to attempt to trace the problem by methodically and repeatedly deleting the WMC database and EPG Collector data files ad nauseum, and then both deliberately triggering the problem and avoiding it. I hope I never see the channel scanning screen again!

Caveat: The below could well only apply to a) my machine (Windows 8 fresh install, with pretty much just WMC, EPG Collector and DVB-T/T2 TV card drivers installed); b) Windows Media Center 8; c) EPG Collector V4.0 with Fixpak 1; or d) DVB-T / Freeview New Zealand.

The disappearing EPG problem is definitely caused by the Automatically map EPG data to channels setting being on in EPG Collector. I'm not sure what's changed since the EPG Collector documentation was written - perhaps it's just WMC 8 - but the setting isn't actually necessary. Whatever's happening behind the scenes, WMC appears to match the EPG data to the correct channels itself. You don't need to match up the channels and listings manually in the Edit Channel / Edit Listings settings in WMC either.

When the Automatically map EPG data to channels setting is on, WMC seems to get confused occasionally (I'm still not sure what specifically triggers this), which causes the guide data to disappear - when the setting's off, this never happens. Also, the DisableInBandSchedule and PeriodicScanEnabled registry values don't need to applied - the EPG data stays present and correct with both inband data and periodic scanning enabled.

Here's my working EPG Collector configuration file:

On my test rig if I start with an empty WMC database and don't use auto map I don't see any data in the guide until I manually map it. That's on satellite.

Not sure about the disappearing EPG but the dot in the guide is caused by receiving terrestrial EIT data. You can check that by getting EPG Collector to do an EIT collection to an xml file and checking the file.

If you are using EPG Collector to collect MHEG5 the only way that can happen is if WMC loads it.

I don't know why but some users have never had to set the registry entries and it still works for them. Others it doesn't work until they set the entries.

I reckon I must have seen all the WMC setup screens a 1,000 times.

Be nice if someone else on terrestrial could do the same things as you to see what results they get. Incidentally between each test you really need to delete the WMC database and start again. Rescanning isn't the same thing.

Perhaps it's just WMC 8 and similar problems with older versions are caused by something else.

Ahhh, MrTomato, you are a life saver! After being stuck in the loop of everything working, hang on, couple of channels missing data, oh dear, couple of hours later nothing has any data for 2 days I stumbled on this thread... Sure enough, untick Automatically map EPG data to channels and it all works perfectly! Previously I had messed around with the Inband registry settings to no avail.

This was on WMC7, I was revising my EPG setup from the previous ancient version of EPG Collector and the BSE tool, to using the latest version of EPG Collector importing directly into WMC7. 2 days on after finding this thread it is still working flawlessly - touch wood!

I have a similar intermittent problem, with some channels, usually either all of tvnz's or tv3's showing as "no data available" in WMC guide,after an EPG Collector collection.  Rerunning EPG collector a day or two later usually remedies the situation.
On terrestrial freeview in Christchurch.  Never had a problem until after the frequency changed last August.

MRTomato, how did you copy the General Log of EPG Collector?

Post the log as soon as you get this problem again.

It's only a text file so if you can navigate to it (look for EPG Collector.log) right click, open in Notepad, select all and copy/paste etc).
