Hey guys,

At our church, we run a number of family movie nights during the year, and currently use our PA system to do 5.1 sound in the multipurpose hall for this (with some pretty nice outcomes depending on the movie).

We currently have a dvd player with rca 5.1 outputs into the audio mixer channels and route to the correct speaker. And component into the VGA of the projector.

With Bluray becoming more and more common, I'm starting to look into options of Bluray for this system, but am more than aware that most bluray players are often just hdmi output.

The new projector does have a HDMI input so thats fine, its just the 5.1 sound that I've gotten really stuck with.

Any thoughts welcome :)

Some bluray players do expose an analog output set but they are becoming few and far between, if you can find one of them then it'd be exactly the same as the current setup. The other option is to HDMI into an A/V receiver which can decode DD/DTS/TrueHD etc that has a set of analog outputs on it and feed that into the PA mixer. Inefficient and possibly annoying yes, but it'll work.

I know there are like $1000 professional bluray players that do have analog outs, but obviously thats out of my budget lol. Do you know of any that do?

I'm not worried about inefficient or annoying, as long as the final result is fine, I love the wiring and setup of it ;)

Something like this...

[
edit] or this bluray has rca audio output....

Bit expensive though, but, it's a nonstandard item on cheap players.

Similar, but would need the analog 5.1 out.

As to a player with analogs out for cheap, yeah I didn't know about budget lol. Sorry. It may be an idea to have a look for some AV recievers with the ability to decode then spit out a line level analog via RCA outputs, or potentially even talk to some sound/light/video hire/production companies. They may have some answers, but could be costly.

it seems to have analog rca out.

[edit]
[sorry ----- i have misread what you are after -- thought you wanted the 2 channel rca out, my bad, but this bad baby does have 2 hdmi out which might also solve your problem if your receiver takes hdmi in ]

Only for stereo RCA out, not 5.1.

The oppo blu-ray players are probably the cheapest with analog 5.1 - http://www.rapalloav.co.nz/blu-ray-players/oppo-blu-ray-players/oppo-bdp-103au-3d-blu-ray-disc-player-au-nz-edition.html

What about ripping the blu ray for the movie and then deleting it after?  and just playing it with a computer

You are already breaking copyright by showing it at a public gathering (my understanding, sorry if I am wrong)

Thanks for your concern, but year we have the Church Video Licence and are very aware of what we can and can't do (eg we can advertise we have a movie night but cannot advertise the title of movie on posters and things like that. We are free to show a trailer in our service and spread the title via word of mouth and show the movie but are not able to charge admission for it)

Well being a church its gotta be legit, is ripping the bluray legal? (I haven't even got a drive to try yet) and if so, then I would look into 5.1 soundcard for a movie pc and making it play in 5.1, tbh pc 5.1 is not something I've ever dabbled in.

We don't currently have any receiver, VGA signals are split/switched multiple ways at the desk and sent up to projector, component goes straight up via a vga cable, composite straight up and (eventually) HDMI will go up somehow. Is a receiver the best way to go it seems, apart from the $800 player... :/

I knew when I started looking this wasn't going to be as straight for as the DVD player setup :( but onwards and upwards :)

I like the idea of a PC with a blu-ray drive. As long as it has an HDCP capable HDMI output (most do) you'll be fine and can just tell the playback software to do a 5.1 analog out of the sound card.
