Hi, my first post here at Geekzone but been a longtime user.

On Weds night my TV screen up and died on me. The bottom corner lit up as I was watching TV, than dissolved into a weird pixelation. I switched the TV off, than after a few mintues switched it back on again. The screen came back on in a garbled image and the bottom right corner proceeded to worsen until smoke started to come out of the screen, at which point I switched the Tv off and pulled the plug out. I have no clue what could have happened, I never touch the TV and live in a child and pet free home. Here are some images I took.

Anyone have a clue what the problem might be? Its a 2013 model purchased in 2014 from Farmers, used for about a year and a half sparingly. Currently seeing to getting it repaired through CGA, just wondering if anyone could enlighten me to some causes.

Thanks for the help.

Yuck. Dangerous. I have the 55" version of this TV. Better not happen to mine before Sunday :p

No idea what happened, or why, but some part in that corner of the screen has let it's smoke out.

CGA should cover you.

Something behind the panel has got too hot and melted/started burning.
Would imagine it would be a write-off.
CGA should back you up for replacement I reckon.

Hello,

The same thing happened to my Samsung TV this weekend Model UN50H5203AF 50" manufactured in June 2014 purchased in November 2014.  We were watching TV and the screen went black except for the bottom right hand corner where there was strange pixel colours.   I turned it off and turned it back on to find the screen came back on but the bottom right corner started smoking (see picture).

Haven't had this problem but have had an 'out of warranty' repair from Samsung and found them excellent.  Called their 0800 number, they were very helpful and gave me a ref# and referred me to the local repair agent (I took it there to save time but they would have collected it at no charge if I wanted).  Call center was aware of the CGA and didn't question that they needed to look at this.  Agent identified the fault, and had it repaired within a day, no charge.

I suggest rather than tangle with the retailer perhaps a call to Samsung's help desk may get the process going a bit faster.

Samsung came over today and replaced the panel. Took about 20 mins. The guy said a part had shorted out. I too would recommend contacting Samsung instead of the retailer in order to speed up the process, they were very efficient in organizing the repair. All working now !

That's pretty impressive for a year old set.

Though it sounds like it's pretty common if we have multiple geekzoners with the same issue...

Samsung is rated 'below average' in hardware reliability according to Consumer. I wonder what the cut off time for a CGA claim is on a TV? Consumer says 12+ years which seems a bit lengthy.

After 12 years, I would not expect CGA help on a $1400 TV. I think for $$1000-2000 you'd expect 2-3 years of manufacturer warranty support. Maybe a little more.
A $5000 set, longer, but maybe not 12 years (I'd hope 5 years CGA support, maybe a couple more?)

Glad Samsung sorted yours out with no quibbles and good speed (as they should have).

Hi,

I did call Samsung and they informed me that there was nothing they could do a it's out of warranty.  They provided me with a number for a local TV repair person.

If you purchased it in November 2014, how is it out of warranty? Surely a TV would have at least a 12 month warranty. And if not, I'd expect you'd definitely have recourse under the CGA.

It definitely looks like something's shorted/burnt in that bottom corner - I have two Samsung TVs - I'll have to keep a close eye on them!

My Samsung story is that I have a six year old front loading washing machine which had a problem earlier this year. It just stopped before the end of the cycle with a drum full of wet clothes and a strange error code that wasn't in the manual. I phoned Samsung's 0800 number and they sent a third party contracted repair agent around to look at it. He determined it was the electronics behind the front panel and ordered a new circuit board from Samsung. Two days later he came back and replaced the board, which turned out not to be the problem. He went straight out to his van and brought in a new motor and replaced that as well. Problem solved, everything now working, and he left. So I have new electronics and a new motor in a washing machine that was well out of warranty, no questions asked by Samsung and it didn't cost me a cent. They may not have the best reputation for quality but you can't fault their service.

Should definately be under warranty or at the very least covered by CGA. Maybe call the retailer and specifically quote the CGA, they are under law to fix the problem for a TV under a year old.

Are consumer saying 12 years now?
Really?
If they are, they need to get their brains into gear... If a 23" TV / DVD combo Veon lasted for 12 years I'd be stoked!

Maybe when 40" TV's cost $12,000... but now, the panels are almost throw away units... many weigh about the same as a tablet...

Earlier this year our 3-1/4 year-old 60" Samsung ES8000 TV developed a dark patch on the screen - about 250 mm in diameter, just north-west of centre. It wasn't hugely bad but was noticeable and annoying.

After reading the posts above, late last week I decided to talk to Samsung about it. At first they weren't keen to play but I mentioned CGA and Consumer's 12 years, etc, and they sent two guys out this morning to look at it. The guys said it shouldn't look like that - and replaced the screen on the spot - free of charge. They had brought a new spare screen in the van with them just in case. They said they they will replace like this on screens up to four years old.

I thought this was quite amazing service - maybe we were entitled to what happened - dunno - but I was impressed and grateful anyway. Having said that, I'm not at all sure this would have happened had I not stood up to their initial reticence to assist.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
