I have an MKVmovie that I want to play on my TV.

My Western Digital TV Live media player usually handles MKV files but this time there's no audio.

(The audio is there - it plays OK on my computer through Pot Player)

I've considered a few options but I think my best bet would be to burn the file to DVD and play it that way.

But I'll need to convert the MKV file to a format that will burn to DVD and run in the player.

Anyone able to recommend suitable software for the job?

Sounds like the audio codec used is one the the WDLive doesn't like just re-encode the MKV and pick MP3 or AAC as the audio codec you can use Handbrake which is free and very good at it's job

Or....

You could use this as an excuse to get a different player e.g. MiBox? :)

I would be inclined to recode it using handbrake as well.
Trying to create a playable DVD can require quite a lot of tinkering.
If the video is ok and it's just the audio, then you can just use handbrake to recode the file and just convert the audio stream.

I use VideoReDo Suite for my recorded video editing. I usually create .ts or .mkv files after editing but it can also create a DVD from a .mkv file.

It must be an oddball audio codec. I don't recall ever having to re-encode a video to play on my WDTV Gen 3 except an H.265. I use MOVAVI to convert to MP4 from MKV for the iPad3.

I recall reading somewhere that WD players don't like AC3 audio. My WDTVLive plays 90% of the MKV files I throw at it, but every so often it balks and says the 'format is unknown'.

Actually, this particular problem is a little unusual. The video plays fine, along with the subtitles, but there's no audio whatsoever.

Normally, when it says it doesn't recognize the file, that's it, there's no video or audio.

Anyway, thanks for your tips, guys. I'll try those suggestions.

Problem solved. I thought I should do a heads-up, as it might help someone else.

Handbrake didn't work for me. It didn't fix the sound issue, but worse, it converted the video from a quality 2.2gb file to 650mb.

When I quizzed the Handbrake forum, I was told that the app wasn't suitable for converting just the audio track to another format.

However, TEncoder (4.5.10) did the job perfectly. It has a setting to 'copy only' the video section. so that doesn't get altered.

I changed the audio from AC3 to MP3 and my Western Digital TV Live media player ran the movie without a hitch. Took about 2 mins.

In fact the problem file was one of ten episodes that WDTVLive objected to, and I was able to convert them all as a batch.

Excellent software.
