I bought two Chromecast ultras, when Noel Leemings had them for $92 last week. I thought they would be a good and affordable way to get TV on demand, Lightbox, Netflix and Plex to a couple of TVs.

I have set them both up on wired connections. For the first one, the setup went smoothly, it showed up in the Google Home app as ready to cast, and I am able to cast to it as expected. Working well and no issues whatsoever.

Flushed with success, I moved on to the second one. Again, the setup process went identically and without a hitch, and it shows up in the Google Home app as ready to cast. It is also displaying backdrop art images and the correct time etc (mirrored under devices in the Google Home app) , so it's clearly connected and seeing both the network and the internet. However, at this point things seem to have come adrift. No matter what I do, it continues to show up on Google Home as ready, but no casting app shows it as an available cast target (the first one continues to show up fine).

This is starting to drive me nuts. I have:

  • done several reboots
  • done several factory resets
  • repeated the setup process three times
  • tried several devices (phone, laptop, tablet)
  • rebooted the router
  • changed the name
  • verified that the firmeare is up to date - it is the same as on the one working OK

All of this has been to no avail. Same result every time, and I am starting to climb the walls. Does any fellow GZer have Chromecast experience and any thoughts about whether there is anything else worth trying?

I have 3 devices and all 3 have suddenly stopped working.

I think there is server side issue starting today.

Phew, thanks GZ for bringing me some sanity. Been rebooting things all over trying to resolve.

Edit: Doesn't appear to affect other casting targets, Android TV, Home Mini or even CC Audio.

According to some other forums, it looks like Google may have pushed out a firmware update in the last couple of hours which is the cause of the issue.

I hope so - the wife just rebooted the Chromecast that was working, and now I can't cast to it either.

I just hope they aren't totally bricked, and that there's enough functionality left working for them to automatically install the fix when it's pushed out.

They definitely are not bricked. The chromecast itself can connect to the Internet, and the Google Home app shows the wallpaper that is on the tv screen.

I spent an hour this evening trying to fix the issue. I changed all my NATed IP ranges on Monday, and thought that was the problem. Hard rebooted devices twice, and did multiple factory resets of the dongle, Then I went on Twitter, and found out a lot of people (everyone?) is having issues.

It will be interesting if ISPs notice a massive reduction in traffic volumes tonight, and Sky/FTA TV had an increase. I certainly used about 10GB less than I usually would on a normal night.

Looks like it’s fixed now 2am.

Earlier when pressed cast button it came up connected but picture didn’t change on TV, stayed on wall paper.

Tested with Light Box and Neon, picture is now changing to their logo’s.

My Chromecast Audio is still working just fine in the office.

Bizzare freak that I am with an Audio.

Had the same problem on my ultra last night too, but my older version Chromecast was not affected.

My Chromecast 2 stopped last night spontaneously, was casting YouTube then switched to Twitch and cast icon was in and out and kept going solid/transparent but not actually working.

Rebooted, got firmware update message then was totally gone from any cast supporting apps, but as others have said was showing up to date wallpaper info in the home app.

OG Chromecast in another room stayed working fine throughout

Let's see if it's fixed tonight.

One of my Chromecast 2s was ok this morning, still two not. Interesting all had different firmware, ranging .29 - .32, not sure if it was a firmware related issue though.

Seems that the issues were fixed around 9am this morning, according to various media reports.

I had two Chromecasts and one had the problem of not being able to cast while the other just doesn't show up.

Still wasn't working this morning at 6.30am but will check when I get home.

One of my google homes wasn't working this morning (although my mini was).  We use it as our kitchen radio, so no RNZ with breakfast today.   Its back up again now.

Made me rethink my impending decision to get an echo spot as my bedroom alarm clock (now that you can use tune-in as an alarm).

Thank goodness for the thread. Went bonkers last night when one at home would not work with exact issue. Rebooted and everything to no luck. Work one broken as well today.

I use an echo Dot by my bed for HA. But I also use its alarm feature and play a Iheart Radio station. The worst that could happen if it fails is I sleep in. Hardly a big deal.
