I’ve decided to buy some speakers and bring my old amp out of retirement. It still works well, but doesn’t have any sort of remote control, unfortunately.

Ideally, I’d like to be able to programme my Harmony remote (IR) to turn it on and off. The issue with leaving it on all the time is just that it seems to still draw quite a bit of power even when not in use. Our TV cabinet is child proofed in a way that it is a bit of a pain to turn anything on and off manually.

I have a power strip with a master/slave socket, which would have been a good option, except that the TV is now wall mounted, with a separate power socket from the cabinet. This also would mean I couldn’t play music with the TV off.

A few years ago, you used to be able to buy plug in power boxes that were controlled by IR. These seem to have disappeared from local stores and been replaced by equivalents with RF remotes.

Anyone have a similar setup that works well?

I have a Broadlink rm3 mini in a cupboard with my old Yamaha. It’s driven from openHAB for turning the receiver on, volume, mode (DVD CD or tuner, which is actually a raspberry pi for AirPlay, a chromecast and the radio ).

The rm3 mini can be controlled via their app if preferred.

A WeMo switch may also do what you are looking for perhaps?

I have one of those remotes you talk of, basically an RF remote that turns anything connected on or off. Works great for table lamps in our lounge, as the switch is otherwise difficult to access. Cost us very little, $25 on sale at bunnings / M10, but I think they're a bit more expensive usually. Try M10 / Jaycar / that yellow electronics store.

Thanks for the feedback - a few options I hadn't considered in there. Now just need to buy some speakers...

Many makers of those remote controlled things have given up on a legit AU design, as one of the aussie states now requires dual pole switching in them, which means an entire redesign etc.

jaycar cleared heaps out a few years back that couldnt be sold over there and now seem to have 10% of the selection for actual legit things with approval numbers etc compared to before.

One possible issue with powering on/off using a remote mains switch is the possible loud ker-thump through the speakers when powering on (and possibly off).

Would depend if the amp has a switched delay circuit on the speakers out or some other electronic means to achieve a soft start, with old amps - probably not.  Easily tested - try having the amp turned on with volume set at normal level, switch it off at the power outlet, and switch it on again.
