I am connecting my computer win10 to my Denon AVRX1500H .

I have used a cable tester to test my first cable and the tester shows that not all the pins are connected.

Bad cable?

My second cable test ok.

Good cable

No my connection works with second cable but not first.

Have I purchased a different type of HDMI cable?

Just use the 2nd cable which is working.

It is most likely the first cable is just faulty, rather than a 'different' type.

What length you need?

And, what type of signal do you need to send (4k? 30p or 60p).

If you want to send 4k60p more than 10 meters away, you may need a better cable (such as active fiber HDMI).

Oh dear this is getting complicated.

Can anyone tell me if you would expect All HDMI cables to have all pins connected?

Basically are there different classes of HDMI cables and might one of them have pins 2,5,8,11,14 not connected?

There are a lot of manufacturers that try to make cables for as little as possible with little in the way of QC... so, yeah.

Some old cables won't utilise all the pins, even then some of the latest cables won't actually either as no one (to my knowledge) is attempting to use ethernet over HDMI.

Just checked the specs on the denon and it supports HDCP 2.2 - it is likely that youl’ll need to use an HDMI 2.0a or later (2.1) cable. I understand they are backwards compatible.

Pins 2, 5 etc seem to be marked as data shields in the spec.

Why do you care about pins? Just buy a new cable of the right length and use it. If it doesn't work, return it.

Supplier is replacing cable.

But they wont say if they could test before sending out...seems dumb.

Anyway I have tested some other cables with connecting denon to computer.

It works fine if cables test good on all pins but no good if some pins don't show as connected.

I purchased a shorter different brand cable as a quick test.This cable has same specs as bad cable.

Shorter cable test OK on all pins and connects denon and computer together fine.

So it must be an issue with bad long cable.

Will see what replacement cable is like.

I got thrown off because ages ago I installed a long cable between to wall sockets.

Tried using that setup last week and it didn't work.Tested between sockets and it seemed to test with the same pins unconnected as my bad cable.

So I was thinking...cant be two bad cables must be a different standard.

Will see what happens.

You you have wall plates that the cable joins? Meaning you technically have 3 cables involved? Or do you have ethernet between wall ports?

Or does the wall plate have a brush plate that the long cable simply passes through?

The cable I have the issue with is directly connect between denon and computer.

Test bad = no connection.

Test good = yes connection.

Ignore wall face plate...not being used in this case.

That's too long to be reliable anyway. Particularly if you have stuff that uses the 12 or worse 18 gigabit modes over it.

There was some new certification things announced at CES but that will probably take forever to get anywhere and be counterfeited long before the real ones arrive here.

I went Fibre Optic for my 20 meter run, works fantastically for 4K60p with Dolby Vision. Well worth the price over a traditional copper cable for long distance.
