Well Samsung really have pulled it off this time! The $80,000 TV... Wondering if anyone has actually brought this. I'm also wondering do we have any device even capable of outputting an 8K resolution?

They have been selling large bleeding edge models for many years. I do wonder who actually buys them, but someone must. I guess if someone wins lotto, or has sold a house for a huge profit. Or just someone who earns a lot of money.

Even if you win lotto would you spend near $100,000 on a TV? I defiantly wouldn't!

It’s not new pricing. I’m sure about 10 years ago a large full hd tv (about 60” or 70”) was similar money.

I remember in the mid 90s going to an apartment where the guy had a 640x480 42” panel, that cost him $20,000

When I was at CES a few years ago now there was one of the big LG panels that from memory was expected to be something like $60k in Australia. The marketing guy from LG Australia that I was speaking to was hoping they would actually be able to get enough stock as they expected they'd be able to sell 100 or so that year.

Remember lots of large panels these days are being used for digital signage so pricing for large screen consumer TV's is in part being dictated by demand for these as well, remembering bigger panels are still harder to make.

There's a few people that have won $30 odd million, so $80k for a TV is chump change.

I guess there's decreasing reliance on external devices as a source, given the increasing prevalence of accessing content online, and doing so via built-in apps.

I've seen a number of 8K clips on YouTube, so I guess, in the short-term, those who buy this $80k TV can watch endless reruns of these nature videos with their always-sounds-the-same elevator music!

EDIT: My facetious comment just above appears to not even be an option, if the article linked to below is correct: "It’s this sort of issue, for instance, which prevents the current YouTube 8K videos from playing on Samsung’s 8K TVs." (That's from Mar 19.)

In the long term, Netflix etc will surely start releasing content in 8K (and apparently some shows may well be already being produced in 8K), but for a while longer owners will be dependent on the quality of the built-in scaler... Sky on an 98" TV, anyone?!

And a quick search shows that Rakuten TV aims to release an 8K streaming service before the end of the year: https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2019/03/15/first-8k-tv-streaming-service-announced-and-its-not-who-you-think/#665daf6826c4

"True 8k resolution".

7680x4320.

7680/1024 = 7.5.

This is not "true" 8k!

At that price, I'd want OLED, not a re-badged LCD. Pass.

Home Cinema 4K displays are  3840 × 2160 , so its twice that...

Panasonic used to sell 4k plasmas on special order. Very expensive.

There is no point in having an 8k TV in your home any time soon. It may be useful for medical imaging and specialist commercial operations but there are fringe TV brands that cater to that market.
