I am after an update on sky to my soon to be built HTPC, the last post was 2008, so I hope things have moved on from there.

I have done quite a bit of reading so I think I know what I need

1) My Sky smart card
2) A CAM that will decrypt Videoguard looks like a Diablo 2 will do it?? as per tradme
3)Card reader module for my HTPC
4) Dual TV/sat card

Would very much appreciate comments, suggestions.

But you're asking about legit sky to htpc....what you detail is probably not strictly.

The only way I think you can get sky to be bound by the terms and conditions of sky, would be an analogue tuner and an IR blaster to change channels.....actually to bring it a bit more up to date a Hauppauge HDPVR may work, but probably via component (and therefore not hd)

Thanks for that, the add for the Diablo 2 says Sky decrypting, interesting. I know Sky like you to use their box but, you got to look to the future. Kicking myself for buying a $650.00 Bul-ray player the 12 months later installing one in the HTPC for $120.00 makes me wounder how long stand alone player will last

I'm not sure why you want a CAM - are you going to be running an external STB?

You just need the card reader if you're running a PC.

Want to get away from the box so that's why I need a CAM.
I have seen some postings about the jaycar card reader but don't know how that would connect to the TV card.
Have seen a combo CAM/TV AzureWave DVB-S2 CI PCI Card but its not dual input. I want to watch and record at the same time

The card reader attaches to the pc, normally via serial (I think usb ones are possible).

Then when a request comes in for the encrypted channel a multidec plugin is used to ask the card reader for a key, which it then uses to decrypt the signal.

I don't think there's any way here to use a CAM module.

The multidec scheme generally works well, but you're prone to the card becoming deactivated as it needs to be put back in the decoder at regular intervals to get EMM updates and it can be a little unstable. But YMMV

HD Western Digital 2TB Green (more to come when funds allow)
RAM 4 GB DDR3
Box Silverstone LC17

Sound going optical out from motherboard to tuner
HDMI out from motherboard to TV

I know that's not perfect but the amp doesn't have HDMI in!!

when using oscam the EMM updates come through to the card. Our htpc has been rock solid for the past year. it has 4 dvb-s2 tuners for sky and 4 dvb-t tuners for freeview hd a jaycar card reader dvblink and 2 bedrooms using xboxes as media extenders. the recorded tv is automatically copied to whs and is backed up every night to :)

Where can I learn more about doing this myself ?

I used to have Sky going to a Hauppauge MCE500 card in my HTPC with a blaster to change the channels and it was great. But I went to mySkyHDi when the football started to be broadcast in HD.

However we only ever watch the football on Sky and Im wondering if its worth the extra expense now. Yes the picture quality is great, but the annoynace factor of having my wife and kids switch to the Sky box to watch what they can on the HTPC is getting on my nerves.

Im assuming if I was to put a card reader into the HTPC I would be able to watch and record Sky through mediaportal for instance ?

Are there any online 'guides' on how to do this ?

That's a VERY nice setup! Did it take long to get it to the point of working well, with a high WAF? Your setup is very close to what I would ultimately like to achieve.

ive never really thought about this, i have sky in my house, but i dont really use it but there are some channels i would like to watch, just not available on my tv. so very interested in this, could someone spell it out for me, imagine im a complete idiot and know nothing, what do i need, where can i get it? what pvrs support it?

ive read something before about CAM (over at gbpvr forums i believe) but thought it didnt work with Sky.

if i could get sky channels legally onto my PVR in hidef without the need of an IR Blaster that would be awesome.

also im using a Mac mini for my server, so all components for the PC must be USB.

I'm also looking at doing this myself so if anyone is going to buy USB card readers from overseas then maybe we can do it at the same time to save some money.
