I can get either of these for $1280, but the deal ends today for both. Samsung has free shipping too but not too worried about paying $50, esp when it's this cheap to land the TV.

Does anyone have any last minute suggestions as to which one I should get?

I'm leaning towards the Samsung personally.

Cheers

I trust the brand Samsung more than LG. Haven't looked at the specs of the models you posted though.

Just bought the PS51D550 myself personally from DSE couple of days ago with free shipping after reading online reviews and advice from a geekzone member who also has one and likes it a lot. Best value for money TV.

Thanks guys. I was thinking the same.

The TVs are similar in spec, both full HD, 3D-ready, basic USB & internet/ethernet functions. One is 50" the other 51". Both are pretty good looking too. The Samsung has more HDMI inputs though and also seems to be a slightly newer model. That combined with the greater number of (good) reviews and free shipping has probably sealed the deal :)

Upgrading from a 37" 720p LCD TV I bought in 2008/2009 so should be good!

To be fair, I believe the Samsung won't really be a 51"... more a 50.6" - Samsung just round it up for 'marketing purposes'. Have you pulled the pin? If you go into stores you may well be able to compare them side by side - which ultimately, is the best possible scenario.

If you intend to hook it up to your computer, see if you can confirm whether either model supports 48kHz sample rate ver HDMI. My Series5 Samsung LCD does not seem to, and looses sync whenever I test at that setting. Samsung NZ were unable to confirm what it actually supports, tech specs say "Two Channel Linear PCM 32,44 1kHz ....". The ... would imply other rates.

I got the 64" D550. Had nothing but issues. The noise that sucker makes is just amazing. The buzzing is incredibly loud. Harveys took it back and swapped it for another one, had the same issue but LOUDER.

In the end they upgraded me to the top of the line Panasonic for free. So worked out better.

But I wont be touching Samsung again anytime soon.

Interesting. Even our 37" (LA37C530) makes more of a buzzing/whining than I would expect (but fairly quiet), and it depends on the input HDMI signal too.

Got mine delivered yesterday. It's fantastic. No buzzing nor anything weird. HD content converted from 2D to 3D looks great. Comes with 1 free 3D glass in the box (RRP $149 at DSE) + I ordered further 5 from ebay for $255 incl 3 business day fed-ex delivery for movie nights.

pro tip - When you unbox the TV, you will notice that there is no way in hell that the stand will fit the TV. Yes you are right. I was scratching my head and was annoyed thinking that it's missing a part because the user guide for the TV says nothing about assembling the TV and stand together. Then I flipped the top box upside down and behind one of the *stuck* thermoplastic was hiding the bit that connects the stand and the TV together including the screws. The instruction manual was also in the same packaging.

Very happy with my purchase. Going to 'break in' my plasma for first 200 hours before I start calibrating it with the AVS HD 709 disc and play around with colour/contrast/brightness settings.

Yeah no other issues aside from that. Normally it wouldn't bother me, as all plasmas have a small buzz. But this was so loud I could hear it even over my surround sound when turned up fairly loudly.

Got mine in a Harvey sale, 64" plus 3D player and 3 glasses for $3400, for the price there was no better tv/deal. Would have been more than happy to keep it without the issues.

Not that I complaining without the outcome as the Panny is hands down the best PQ I've seen on a TV.

I came in here to post this exact same thing lol. Don't have much else to add!

I had a lok at AVS HD 709 briefly and it seems you need colour filters to do a lot of it? Then again I only looked briefly...

Can you send the link to that glasses deal on ebay please?

Below is the seller I bought the 5 pack from. He has increased his prices now from the looks of it but still cheaper than DSE! I bought the SSG-3100GB model 5 pack for USD$190 incl Fed-Ex 3 business day shipping.
