mine has died too.  although, i think it is either the charger or battery that is dead because i wasn't able to charge it for about a week, but during that time the thing actually worked.  it's just now that the battery has run out I can't recharge it :)

I contacted DSE head office who told me to take it in to the store and they'll arrange the whole replacement thing.  I was told that they had a 30 day right of return by a DSE head office rep.

*blinks stupidly and coughs with embarrassment* oh yeah, 14days, but it's still under a warranty.

Was it getting hot due to over clocking or in standard mode?

Still I desire one.  The ideal remote for the media_server.

And you cannot even replace the battery as there are no 'official' spare batteries for the eee yet.

It's the retailers legal responsibility to honour the CGA. They can't send you direct to the supplier or service outfit unless you agree. They can of course sent it away for repair if they choose to do so, but let them do all the running around.

Point to note tho, ASUS have quite a good turn around time (Well at least they did when I sent my Laptop away about a year ago) which may be faster than going through DSE.

So do you guys think I should take it back to DSE or Asus? I'm actually kinda confused. I have confused myself actually. The dude at the store said I had a 30 day warranty. I didn't want to purchase an additional 12 month warranty because ...well... I'm a Linux nerd. We don't do warranties.

But this is the first retail computer I have ever bought. As a computer. Not bits. And the first time I have ever touched OEM Linux too. I just hope that going through DSE doesn't screw me around or something. Cos I really don't want to goof this up and I only have a few days left.

This may be true but it is often much easier and quicker in some cases for the end user to deal with the manufacturer as they provide full RMA services. Samsung is a good example for this.

Yeah what I'm going to do is call Asus on Monday before going into DSE. I'll hear what Asus have to say, and then go in and talk to DSE. I mean, they're all on the same side here so its not too much of a big deal right?

The DSE guy suggested I talk to Asus because I asked questions about recovering the data. I asked about their privacy policy with regards to peoples' data. Because I had 'sensitive business information' on it. Actually it had photos I took when I crashed my motorcycle a few weeks ago. Got wicked road-burn all over my body. Damn I want those pictures back.

I had a look on the DSE site, at the eee PC, they say "Where no further stock is due, please be aware that in some cases the product may be shop soiled, ex-demonstration, repaired, or incomplete." that's for the white ones. So if it needs replacing then you go direct to ASUS.

DSE have a dumb site when it comes to linking. Don't they want the shopping to be a social thing?

DSE did put this on their Guarantees.

You
may have rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. Dick Smith
Electronics' Terms of Trade (available from each store or from our head
office) will apply to all supplies of goods and services. These Terms
of Trade exclude the provisions of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993
where goods or services are acquired for the purposes of a business.
Manufacturer's guarantee.
  • All New Zealand manufacturers' guarantees are fully valid on products we sell
  • Periods of guarantee. Unless stated otherwise, and subject to any
rights you may have under the Consumer Guarantees Act, items in this
catalogue now carry a standard warranty of 90 days from date of
    purchase.
Many items now carry warranties from 12 months to 2 years,
and some up to 5 years. Please ask our store staff for details.
  • Warranty Service. If you are not supplied with a guarantee card,
keep your cash register receipt, in a safe place, as the register
receipt will become your guarantee card. If your purchase requires
warranty service within the warranty period, you will be requested to
produce your register receipt when returning the product under warranty
    for repair.

When goods are faulty, we will return it, freight FREE.
Repairs under warranty are carried out free of charge. Where goods are
not faulty or where you have acquired the goods for business purposes,
you will be required to pay the freight both ways. Therefore, to save
yourself money, make absolutely certain that the unit is faulty before
returning for repair.

Faulty goods returned for repair must be accompanied by a sales docket
or proof of purchase. Please note: Under our terms of trade, the
provisions of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not apply where
goods are acquired for business purposes.

If you have a closer look you will see that there is a NEW Asus Eee PC on their website.

So it still could be replaced within 14 days aslong as a store had stock of the new white one.

DSE offer a "Satisfaction Guarantee" which is this quote "Shop with confidence with our 'Change of Mind' Policy 14 day money back guarantee. Where you change your mind, goods can only be accepted for refund or exchange in unmarked original condition and packaging complete with all instruction books, accessories etc."

I think you fault is covered for 90days to get fixed. 14 day's, you can say, you changed your mind and get your money back.

I don't see any problem that that should not be fixed within the 1st 90 days.

I would have gone for the 5year warranty and gone for replacements.
But no warranty would make battery hacks less of a stress.

CGA states the retailer has the responsitbility to put things right. If you choose to deal with Asus directly, no problem, but otherwise, DSE must put it right. I have never had any problems with DSE service - always happy to refund or exchange goods if faulty, no hassle.

FYI: I have a white eeepc upgraded to 1GB ram. Has stock standard OS on it, and eeeXubuntu running perfectly on a 4GB SD card (and no crazy bootloaders - the eeepc natively lets you boot from SD by pressing ESC at bios post). I love it to bits and want to keep it, but my partner does not enjoy it, and wants a laptop again. If anyone wants to buy my eee (fully boxed, as new, double the standard RAM, all documentation and DSE receipt for warranty), or swap for a laptop of same value, pm or email me.

I will trade my broken EEE for yours with lots of RAM plz k thnkx.

Interesting thread we have going here. I have spoken to Asus and they are going to pick it up. There's an IVR which said to me that Data is not covered under the warranty and its my own fault for not backing up.

Cool, that is the result that was expected in both regards (pickup and data cover). Now you just have to wait patiently and hope they are speedy . . .

isolated my problem to the charger/power supply - not the eeepc itself - which is a relief!
I'll be taking the charger in to DSE tomorrow morning for a replacemt to be ordered.

Sad that could not image copy the computer 4GB SSD drive onto 1 dvd for you.  I thought  it would be part of the plug and play test.

4GB,  you could back it up to google mail (6.8GB) umm :)
