That's rare for HP, but you're absolutely right that it does happen, any company can have a bad product release. Toshiba who are traditionally considered one of the best laptop manufacturers have released a couple of absolute dogs over the years (in business grade gear). I'd still rate HP and Toshiba as the two best laptop brands thou :-)

Agree with this, also that any make can have a bad patch and even poor makes can sometimes produce good products. I would have liked my Acer notebook except for the trackpad issue. My complaint with them is threefold: First, I find it unforgiveable that they created this kind of problem in the first place by using an adhesive conductor when a soldered cable would have avoided the whole issue and cost so little extra, second, that they refused to consider that it was a real issue and kept fobbing people off by telling them to reinstall Windows or drivers or take it to a service center, third, that their 'service' was so poor. I won't buy another Acer because I can't trust them and the next problem may not be so easy to fix.

Very small part cost but a whole different assembly sequence required.

Not if you open it up and look at it. Assemble as before, solder earth wire, insert battery and attach two holding screws.

No, you think it's as simple as that, but that is NOT how these things get made.

It requires entirely different people, different order of assembly, different tools.

Bottom line is they aren't designed to last. Not every notebook sold will have this issue.

You would be very surprised how these things are made compared to how you'd think they get made. I know I was surprised.

Cost and time efficiency is the objective.

Did you use lead-free solder?

Nope. I always insist on leaded solder at Jaycar and I'm glad they still sell it.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I honestly don't understand this. How hard can it be to solder a wire? I get the principle but you don't have to retool an entire factory and hire legions of specialists for something like that. I just refuse to believe it.

Apart from that, the trackpad issue emerged on my computer after about two months. It sure should be designed to last longer than that. It is shoddy work, end of story.

Cost and time efficiency are not the objective. The objective is to sell products and make money. This is not the way to achieve that.

I'm sure the manufacturers will have investigated alternatives and concluded the conductive adhesive stuff works. They aren't allowed to use leaded solder because of RoHS directives.

I hadn't thought of that but the adhesive clearly doesn't work well enough in view of all the complaints. There are screws everywhere so why not a couple of extra ones to screw down an earthing wire? It's not rocket science.

Realistically anything "consumer" grade is made to last 1-3 years tops, as long as the majority of the devices they sell last this period (warranty) the manufacturer doesn't care.

Enterprise machines are a totally different animal, I have historically had the best support and hardware from HP and the worst from Lenovo (their RMA process was terrible and their salespeople are slow).

Acer build quality is pretty sub standard on a lot of their products however their RMA process is acceptable, not sure if the savings are worth the downtime and expense of logging them though..

Dell had a very bad run several years ago, I have not had to deal with them much since so not sure if they have improved or not but it does appear they are trying to change the company around ATM.

My health is excellent and the environmental effects of my solder are unmeasureable. I think there are much bigger things to worry about first.
