Yeah, that's the one. I've never had a blue screen though. Once in a while the black strip you write on will freeze requiring a restart but that's infrequent enough not to bother me- about 4 times maybe, including once today.

How did you get the pen going again after it cut out?

I've found through trial and error a quick reverse to touch the screen with the eraser gets it going again if you do it immediately otherwise it will eventually resume on its own but it can take a variable amount of time.

Mine's been pretty good today during email and browsing sessions and some note taking on sticky notes during phonecalls and a bit of one-note 2016 desktop version but this morning it was cutting out every five minutes during solitaire which I was playing mainly to test the pen. I had done a shut-down after the buggy solitaire session as I had some stuff to do and as a rule I almost never "sleep" a device except my iPad.

I just put the tablet to sleep and woke it back up. The Pen worked as soon as I logged in.

I'll give that a try if my eraser trick stops working.

JayADee:

gzt: Is there anything new in the event log at fail time?

Nothing I can see at the times it happens. 2:46 was the last one and I don't see anything under Administrative Events, Summary Page events, windows logs. Any where in particular should look?

Applications and services log. Also see if you can identify the pen device drivers specifically and try a Google search for logging options for those drivers. That info may be associated with the manufacturer of the pen/sensor setup if it is a common base.

Thanks. Zero in the logs. I opened my mail and web browser this morning and the pen cut out five times in less than five minutes and nothing in the logs anywhere can find. I'll see what I can find about pen driver logs.

So guys I'm torn about whether I should ask the shop to try a third unit to see if I can get one that works. This one seems to cut out even more frequently than the last one but it may just be my perception. If it was only one every couple hours I could live with it but sometimes it is once a minute!

If the next one is like this too it will be pointless.

Stu, you only had it happen once?

And PS if the device manager window is open there is a noticible flicker of the window every time the pen cuts in or out. If that help diagnose at all.

Never had an issue with the pen. I suggest getting a brand new unit.

Only problem I had with the pen was yesterday while doing the testing. It's the only time I've used it for that period of time as I haven't had much need for it so far.

Yeah I reckon a lot of people might not use it much. At work or for really serious stuff I use a mouse and the type cover but for home and leisure I'm strictly pen which is the beauty of the design I think. And when it works it's the nicest PC/tablet I've ever owned. Surely if this was normal there would be more howling online.

I'm going to try one more. The shop is going to try to find a later batch so at least I can hopefully avoid the long updates.

Maybe I should sacrifice a carrot or dance around a fire naked or something to ensure a positive outcome.

At least the shop has been really great to deal with.

I use my pen on and off during most of the day, writing, instead of a mouse etc and I don't have this issue on either SP4 or SB

No help to you I know, but we do know about this issue and are still investigating it.  Hold tight.

I think a chunk of the problems are with Windows 10. I've now lost my Start menu, and it doesn't seem to want to come back! Trying some workarounds, but no luck so far. This happened after I had problems with the driver for the LAN port on the Surface port replicator.

Yeah it could indicate the device and or driver died and restarted, but we are getting close to windows voodoo.

In addition to earlier comments see if you can locate the software directory for all the pen stuff. You might find logs there.
