Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice as to why my Telecom connection has slowly gotten worse. It's not bad but it's not as good as it used to be.

I currently sync at 0.841Mb up and 12.647Mb down. When I first moved into my house several years ago it would sync at 18Mb down and around 1.1Mb up but over the years this has slowly decreased and is now 33% slower.

There was a chorus tech working hooking up our neighbours house with BB today so I asked him what he expected I should be syncing at and he said close to maximum for ADLS2+ because the cabinet is only 50 metres away.

I haven't changed any hardware in my setup and am still running the same Speedtouch 536v6 that I always have (it's rock solid).

I have listed my link info below. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I'm thinking of switching to VDSL2 (with Snap) for better upstream but would like to diagnose this problem first.

Have you done an isolation test?

Do you have a master filter installed?

Yup did the isolation test as per the geekzone site and no noticeable differnce.

No I don't have a master filter.

If you are a genuine 50m away your attenuation figures are very high.

Was your isolation test merely unplugging all devices, or physically disconnecting all wiring and plugging the modem directly into the demarc?

If the issue is your home wiring (and statistically there is a high chance it would be) a master filter is the fix.

I really am 50m away.

My isolation test consisted of unplugging the only other device in the house, that being my phone.

Yup I realise that, just trying to figure out why I've experienced a 33% drop in sync rate with no change in hardware.

Hi, either your not 50m of cable away (ie cable runs up other side of the street for 700m and back down to you) or you have something loading your line.

Your noise margin is 15dB, so my guess if for whatever reason you have been placed on a very conservative profile. I still would recommend a full isolation test, ie disconnecting all wiring at the demarc and connecting to the inbound line with no other wiring attached.

99.9% sure I will come back and say you need a master filter.

Yup I agree a master filter would be the best option just strange how the connection has deteriorated over the last few years. I see Snap will install a master splitter for $400 if I sign up for VDSL2 - is that a reasonable price or would a sparky be cheaper?

New Cat 5 from the demarc should solve it. Unless its the cable between you and the cabinet. These guys get a bit excited about a master splitter but if you only have a couple of jacks and it was fine this won't solve anything.

Hi, it will if you are putting the modem on a stub rather than the end of the line, all depends how and where its split. The effects can be anywhere from minor to 100% or more of extra sync rate. If your after VDSL2 its will have a massive impact.

Think the $400 will include the splitter/filter install but it will be for something else as well considering a ADSL/VDSL2 filter is only $20+........

This scenario here is a very classic example of a probable internal wiring fault - multiple jackpoints with a connection that degrades over time which is quite often caused by corrosion in wiring or a jack.

Even if you have a "couple" of jacks a master filter is the only way of eliminating line stubs created by multiple jackpoints. A 2-3 jack install with no wiring fault may not see much more than 5 - 10% increase with a master filter, but with VDSL2 the extra jackpoints can easily shave a good 10 - 15Mbps off yor sync speed.
