I see there's an interesting W850 decision investor presso on the telecom investor microsite - there's a huge capex increase to bring forward full nationwide 3G deployment and talks about an 'extensive fibre programme" presumably to support this build.

You can download the presso at

http://www.telecom.co.nz/binarys/telecoms_w850_mobile_network.pdf

They also reckon that "Moving to WCDMA at 850 MHz now will…"
  • Deliver on our promise to our Customers
  • Revitalise Telecom’s brand
  • Provide NZ’s largest and fastest mobile network
  • Create competitive advantage
  • Demonstrate our commitment to being "No.1 in broadband, mobile and ICT"
  • Provide significant momentum to the turnaround to Telecom’s business

Time will tell... ;-P

$33 million to dump GSM. I'm sure another operator would have happily paid for that a prebuilt network! :-)

Telecom shares down to $2.43 - it's hard to keep greedy investors happy..

Here is the slide deck distributed to media before the conference call. I am sorry it does not bring anything new, but interesting tips I say:

RichardE: Details are at

http://www.telecom.co.nz/newnetwork

From this site:"3G services will be available across 97% of the country OR 97% of where Kiwi’s work and live."
I'm sure this will be cleansed soon - 97% pop coverage isn't the same thing as 97% land coverage!

No mention of who is doing the WCDMA850 build - did Ericsson get a toe in the door or did Alcatel-Lucent retain this?

it now says:

Nationwide 3G coverage

3G where 97% of New Zealanders live and work.

3G in more places than ever before, it’s all about doing what’s possible in the city anywhere in NZ.

It means you can email or video call from a mobile in Hokitika to a loved one in Christchurch, download music on the slopes at Whakapapa or get directions quickly for navigating country roads or city streets.

It was mentioned during the conference call. I posted in my Twitter: Alcatel-Lucent is doing the wok. All my Twitter posts around that time are comments about the conference call.

Alcatel-Lucent

I don't see this "3G services will be available across 97% of the country"

I couldn't find this statement - where is it?

The statement "3G where 97% of New Zealanders live and work." (which is population based) means that the 3G footprint will be much the same as the current mobile voice footprint.

Network build contract has gone to Alcatel Lucent
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4728025a13.html

Interesting write up about Alcatel Lucent.... hmmm i would prefer them doing the roll out over Nokia Siemens i think. Ericsson missed out, incummbent makes sense i guess.

The rumor mill has certainly been working overtime in recent months  but I think it would be fairly safe to say that while Alcatel-Lucent are building the network had it not been for Ericsson trying to get back into the NZ market then Telecom may not have gone down this change of direction quite so soon.

97% of where people live work and play. Note the network infill is in full swing and potential new sites will go in to new areas going forward. Where CDMA is available, WCDMA will be available.

hey thanks for that BigFella

The error was corrected on the page proofs with the correct population based coverage figure but for some reason the online amend simply added the OR rather than replace the previous. The correction's being done now - normally alts stage to a production server and go live overnight.

$527mil = 3G to 97% of where kiwis work and live

$???? mil = 3G to 97% of the country

thanks for your help identifying the error ;-)

sbiddle: $33 million to dump GSM. ...

So is the "GSM Impairment Charge (abnormal item) -33 $m" accounting-speak for "we have canned any plan to provide GSM850" as part of the roll-out?

It doesn't surprise me that it's Lucatel - we all know Telecom's not beyond rattling cages to get prices down. I feel for Ericsson, they were pretty keen to get back into NZ in a big way.

I missed quite a lot of the "Telecom dumps its GSM network" action - I did hear a rumour they had arranged sale of the kit though. Can anyone point me in the direction of threads about this?
